McKinney -- The McKinney Fire Department is warning of the risk of freezing pipes in fire protection sprinkler systems.  In December, McKinney firefighters responded to 42 incidents due to frozen pipes in commercial sprinkler systems.

Commercial businesses and apartment complexes need to pay special attention to their fire sprinkler systems since the city doesnít frequently experience extreme cold.  Riser rooms and all other areas with sprinkler piping are required to have a space or unit heater to prevent freezing. Inspect heaters to ensure proper working order and maintain a least 40 degrees at all times. All water-control valves should remain open. It is a very real risk if you donít take the time to maintain your system.
