Dallas --  The IRS is seeking volunteers to train for the upcoming filing season to provide free tax help. Working in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program can be rewarding while serving a vital role in your local community. No previous experience is required.

“The IRS works closely with key partners that support and promote VITA and AARP Tax-Aide programs throughout Texas, like Foundation Communities Tax Centers, Goodwill Industries of Greater Dallas, Catholic Charities of Fort Worth, Greater Longview United Way, Wichita Falls North Side Community Center, NTC Baker/Ripley and the United Way of Jefferson County,” said Clay Sanford, an IRS spokesman.

The IRS VITA and TCE program offers free tax preparation to people with low-to-moderate income who need help preparing their own tax returns. This includes people with disabilities, senior citizens—and many sites are able to assist individuals for whom English is a second language. During the 2018 filing season, volunteers helped prepare over 3.5 million returns at thousands of volunteer tax sites nationwide.

Volunteering can be exciting, educational and enjoyable. Here are a few good reasons to consider signing up to help:

• No previous experience required

• IRS provides free online tax law training

• Tax Professionals (Enrolled Agents and Accountants) can earn CPE credits

• Flexible volunteer hours

• Various volunteer locations

Free training is available online with classroom style training generally offered November through January. The instruction and training materials cover how to prepare individual income tax returns, both federal and state, and how to file them electronically. Volunteer hours are flexible, and free tax help sites are normally located in places like community centers, libraries, schools and churches.

For additional information and next steps, submit your inquiry now using the VITA/TCE Volunteer and Partner Sign Up, and you will be one step closer to becoming a VITA or TCE tax volunteer. We will share your volunteer interest with sponsoring organizations in your area for follow-up contact.
