Lone Star Park announces 2019 season of new and fun-filled experiences for the entire family beginning April 18

Grand Prairie, Texas -- Lone Star Park prepares to kick off its 2019 Thoroughbred season jam-packed full of the kind of non-stop racing action that horse enthusiasts throughout North Texas have grown to love. During its 23nd season, slated from April 18 through July 21, Lone Star Park will additionally offer exciting, fun-filled experiences from the Extreme Racing of camels and ostriches to a Kentucky Derby celebration to fur-tastic canine fun during Lone Star Bark to a patriotic salute on July 4th and 5th. 

Thoroughbred racing season opens with the Texas Bluebonnet Stakes on Thursday, April 18 for a 44-day run and has 13 stakes races on the schedule worth a combined total of over $1.1 million dollars. All the entertainment and numerous giveaways complement the non-stop horse racing action that make for a fun, affordable time that you won’t soon forget.

Slated Lone Star Park Thoroughbred Season activities include:

Texas Bluebonnet Stakes, Thursday, April 18
With spring in full bloom, live horse racing action kicks off at 6:35 p.m. featuring the $50,000 Texas Bluebonnet Stakes for Texas-bred, 3-yr-olds and up at 6 ½ furlongs. Celebrating the State Flower of Texas, gates open early at 5:35 p.m. The park will be decked out throughout with the beloved blue wildflower, a great opportunity for families to snap their annual bluebonnet photos while enjoying majestic equine racing.

Extreme Racing – Saturday, April 27
By popular demand, Lone Star Park is bringing back the very popular Extreme Racing, featuring camel, ostrich and zebra races ridden by Lone Star Park’s very own jockeys.  These out-of-the-ordinary exotic animal races will be run on the main track between regularly scheduled Thoroughbred races.

The afternoon also includes a Family Fun Park on the lawn, complete with bounce houses, a petting zoo and pony rides.

Steve Sexton Mile - Sunday, April 28
Sunday, April 28th is the Grade 3, $300,000 Steve Sexton Mile.  Previously run as the Texas Mile and now named after the late Steve Sexton, who served as Lone Star Park’s Vice President and Assistant General Manager and later as president of Churchill Downs Inc.’s Arlington Park. With his family in attendance, it will also include live music, celebrating Sexton’s legacy, and raising funds and awareness for the Steven P. Sexton Foundation, which helps underprivileged and well-deserving individuals with college financial assistance.
 
Kentucky Derby Day – Saturday, May 4
Watch, wager and win on the 145th running of the Kentucky Derby simulcast live from Churchill Downs.  In addition to the simulcast event, Lone Star Park will host the ‘Kentucky Derby Best Hat’ contest with celebrity judges for a chance to win multiple prizes! One (1) winner in each of our categories, “Most Stylish” and “Most Creative”, will receive $500 with an additional three (3) winners receiving “A Day at the Races” package for Honorable Mention. This family fun event will also include a Family Fun Park on the lawn with a petting zoo and pony rides. 

Lone Star Bark – Saturday, May 11
Bring your best four-legged friend and enjoy Thoroughbred racing at the 4th annual “Lone Star Bark.” The afternoon includes dog races with cash prizes, $1 hot dogs, pet vendor booths and on-site adoptions with Prairie Paws Adoption Center. You’ll have a howling good time!

Preakness Stakes Day – Saturday, May 18
Catch all of the action with the middle jewel of the Triple Crown! The 144th Preakness Stakes will simulcast live from Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore, Maryland. Find out if this year’s Kentucky Derby Winner will continue the Triple Crown bid.

Lone Star Park Turf Stakes – Saturday, May 27
$100K Lone Star Park Turf Stakes, Fillies and Mares, 3-year-olds and up for one mile on turf.

Belmont Stakes Day – Saturday, June 8
You won’t want to miss the chance to watch, wager and win on the 151st running of the Belmont Stakes, simulcast live from Belmont Park! You could witness history if the Triple Crown is on the line.

Lone Stars & Stripes Fireworks Celebration – Thursday, July 4 and Friday, July 5
Two spectacular nights of fireworks will be held at Lone Star Park on July 4th and 5th following the races.  In addition to live racing and fireworks, enjoy additional entertainment for the entire family with live music from Vegas Stars. Visit our expanded Family Fun Park, which includes bounce houses, face painters, tattoo artists, pony rides, a petting zoo and much more from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  In addition, all members of the military will receive one (1) free general admission with a valid military I.D.

ALL-NEW Tribute Bands
Lone Star Park lets the good times roll with ever-popular tribute bands throughout the season on the Courtyard of Champions Stage during and after live racing. It’s the perfect opportunity for everyone to sing along and dance to favorite songs. Leading it off on April 27th, Blaze of Glory will rock the stage with 25 years of worth of Bon Jovi hits. Catch American Petty on April 28th with the Southern Rock hits of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.  On Kentucky Derby day, May 4th, the Stoneleighs recreate the sound and feel of the Rolling Stones note for note. Enjoy the ultimate Journey experience with Escape on May 11th. Rock fans will love the music of Cold as Ice, a Foreigner tribute band, on May 18th.  Get ready for Def Leggend! The Def Leppard tribute band appears at Lone Star Park on May 27th. A Beatles tribute band, Hard Days Night, takes stage on June 8th. Rock & Roll Over will deliver a top flight KISS show, including KISS style guitars, costumes and theatrics, on June 13th. On Stars of Texas day, July 14th, King George, a George Strait tribute band, is a perfect way to celebrate the day.

 Tickets for the 2019 Thoroughbred season are currently on sale.  Prices range from $5 to $27.  Children under three years of age are free. Restrictions, exclusions and additional charges may apply. Children under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent.
