Commerce, Texas -- The No. 8 Texas A&M University-Commerce softball team defeated No. 19 Tarleton 2-0 on Friday afternoon. The Lions won the game on a walkoff two-run home run from Avery Boley.
The win brings the Lions to 40-12 on the season and they advance to the South Central Regional Championship game for the second consecutive season. The TexAnns fall to 40-14 and they move into the loser's bracket.
The Lions await their opponent in Saturday's championship game. They will face the winner of the Cameron and Tarleton game. The championship game will be played at noon on Saturday at the John Cain Family Softball Field. Tickets to the South Central Regional Championship game are available at or by purchase at the gates of the field.

Head Coach Richie Bruister: "That was an outstanding ball game. For Otto to keep her composure like that in a back-and-forth game was outstanding. We had a lot of runners get on, a lot of opportunities. We just wanted to get that one big hit. And it finally came. Boley just crushed it, there was no doubt about it. The wind was blowing in 15 miles per hour from center field and there was no doubt it would leave the park. It was great for the fans and was a heart attack for the coaches. But we are still standing. I'm really proud of the team with how they kept their composure and the will to win was awesome.
Freshman Avery Boley

The walkoff homer: "Before the inning, Coach Bruister told us to imagine ourselves winning the game. And I did that. Tarleton had been throwing at me in all season and I took a couple steps off and saw the ball and it was down the middle. And I hit the ball far."
Freshman Madison Schaefer

On the defensive effort from the team: "Overall, it was a great game played by both teams and was a pitcher's duel. On defense, we just want to get the girl out. I don't want to see base runners on. We just want to get the ball and throw the girl out."

- Avery Boley (Fort Worth Nolan Catholic) hit a walkoff home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.

- Emily Otto (Richmond Lamar Consolidated) pitched her second consecutive shutout of the tournament. She allowed just two hits with six strikeouts, earning her 28th win of the season.
- Chealsea Slider (Texarkana Texas HS) also had a hit. Ta'Lyn Moody (Mansfield Legacy) also scored a run.
- The Lions drew seven walks in the game, leaving nine runners on base in the game.
- The Lions advance to the South Central Regional Championship game for the second year in a row.
It was an old-fashioned pitcher's duel until the very end as both teams had quality pitching performances throughout the day in windy conditions.
The TexAnns had two players reach base in the first inning via walk before the Lion defense was able to get the outs it needed. Otto had strikeouts in the first and second innings as she held TSU hitless through four innings.
The Lions had the bases loaded in the second inning and threatened to score. Slider gave the Lions the first hit of the day and two other players walked. However, a strikeout ended the inning and the teams were tied at zero after two complete innings.
The Lions again loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth inning. Madison Schaefer (Frisco Independence) lined a shot at the third baseman and the catch was made to keep a run from coming across.
The TexAnns were able to get their first hit of the game in the fifth inning before the Lions turned a double play. A strikeout from Otto ended the inning. Otto again struck out a batter in the sixth inning and another in the seventh inning to keep the game scoreless.
After finding multiple ways to get on base in the game, the Lions were able to get the hit they needed in the seventh. After Kinsie Hebler (Cypress Cy Fair) drew a walk, Boley hit a mammoth shot to right center to walk off the game.
