Bonham City Council taps Evans to be Associate City of Bonham Municipal Court Judge

Bonham, Texas -- Bonham Mayor H.L. Compton presided over a regular meeting of Bonham City Council held Monday, July 8, 2024. Councilmembers John Burnett, Kevin Hayes, Allen Sanderson, Ernie Quintana and Wayne Moore were present; Tim La Vergne II was absent. The meeting opened with an invocation by George Turner, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Bonham.

City council approved minutes from a regular meeting held June 10, 2024.

Bonham City Council approved the financial report for the month ending June 30, 2024. Sarah Osburn, Director of Administrative Services, said the city's sales tax revenue is 9.3% higher than last year at this time.

Bonham Police Chief Andrew Hawkes administered the oath of office for new a officer.

In the segment of the regular meeting reserved for citizens to speak, four people addressed city council regarding a need for mosquito control, sand trucks speeding through Bonham on Hwy. 78, concerns regarding the animal shelter, a free dental event returning to Bonham on April 11-12, 2025, and a suggestion to allow speakers four minutes at the podium, as opposed to the current three-minute time limit.

Bonham Mayor H.L. Compton presented the Americans with Disabilities proclamation to April Martin of Workforce Solutions Texoma. July 26, 2024 will be the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Ms. Martin said more information will soon be on display at Bonham Public Library.

City council reappointed Jake Shockley, Lance Davis, Austin Ashlock and Jerry Etheridge to the Airport Advisory Board.

City council approved a resolution authorizing professional service provider selection for the Community Development Block Grant – Mitigation (CDBG-MIT) Resilient Communities Program through the Texas General Land Office (GLO).

The city believes it is on a short list competing for a $300,000 grant, with no matching funds required, to be used to address critical-planning needs.

City council held a public hearing and then approved an ordinance adopting a water conservation plan for the City of Bonham to promote responsible use of water and to provide for penalties or disconnection of service for noncompliance with the plan.

City council held a public hearing and then approved an ordinance pertaining to illegal water connections and/or the theft of water related to the water supply for the City of Bonham.

City council held a public hearing and then approved an ordinance amending Chapter 3 (Building Regulations), Chapter 14 (Zoning) and Exhibit 14A (Zoning Ordinance) within the Bonham Code of Ordinances.

The ordinance will be enforced after a 60-day grace period.

City council held a public hearing and then approved an ordinance amending the Bonham Code of Ordinances by repealing and replacing Chapter 10 “Subdivision Regulations” and Exhibit 10A “Subdivision Ordinance.

City council held a public hearing and then approved an ordinance Exhibit 14A (Zoning Ordinance) within the Bonham Code of Ordinances.

City council held a public hearing and then approved an ordinance for the erection of stop signs at four locations.

a. The intersection of Cherry Street and E. 7th Street (one-way stop), stopping traffic traveling west,

b. The intersection of Elm Street and E. 7th Street (two-way stop), stopping traffic traveling east and west,

c. The intersection of Parkview Drive (one-way stop), stopping traffic traveling south,

d. The intersection of Cedarview Drive and Elmview Drive (one-way stop), stopping traffic traveling north.

 Bonham City Council appointed local attorney Michael Evans as Associate City of Bonham Municipal Court Judge and discussed the future appointment of a full-time City of Bonham Municipal Court Judge.

The current City of Bonham Municipal Court Judge, John Skotnik, has been elected to be the next Fannin County Criminal District Attorney and will assume those duties January 1, 2025.
