PTA Supplies Supplies!

In an effort to help students have the exact school supplies needed by each teacher, Wakefield's PTA, puts together “Back To School Boxes.”  In the spring, the PTA members contact each teacher and ask what they request for next year’s school supplies.  The list is specific to the individual teacher so every class has a different list.  During the summer supplies are gathered, separated and the supply boxes are filled with all name brand products.  Supplies are ordered in bulk which keeps the cost is low.  Parents place their order in the spring and thus avoid the crowds and hassle of school supply shopping.  The boxes await the students when they arrive on the first day.  Project chairman, Suzanne Cross explained that this is not a fundraiser, but a way the Wakefield PTA is trying to meet the needs of the teachers and students.

Gift Giving by SEF

The Sherman Education Foundation was happy to fund requested campus enhancement projects totaling $73,210.65 at Monday night’s school board meeting.

SEF Director, Kathy Bickerstaff along with SEF president, Diana Svane thanked the board of trustees and campus staff members for their part in making fund-raising efforts such a success.

Examples of projects funded are as follows:  Crutchfield received accelerated math scanners.  Fairview received kindergarten non-fiction readers and monies for after school projects. Jefferson and Perrin received Orff musical training.  Wakefield and Perrin received monies for a Dallas Museum of Art field trip.  Washington received a program for accelerated acquisition of the English language.  Dillingham Intermediate School received funds for a colonial days blacksmith presentation.  Piner received funds for a Holocaust Memorial Center field trip.  Sherman High School received funds for world famous trumpet player, Wayne Bergeron to conduct a two day clinic at Sherman High School.  The Douglass Learning Center received a desktop presenter and work station and Boot Camp received library enhancements.  The thirty-one projects funded include four by the Hudson foundation, one by the Regensberger Foundation, the Mayor Foundation and the WalMart Literacy Foundation.  SISD offers a Bearcat thank you to these generous foundations and the diligent work of the Sherman Education Foundation.

Stadium Project Running Right On Schedule

The new additions to Bearcat Stadium are up and running and ready for the Bearcat football team to take the field and win Friday night against Hillcrest High School.  New concession stands, restrooms, ticket booths and a really cool paint job await the fans.

Shown here are workers putting on the final touches to the east side entrance area.

A Family Affair

Most of the schools in the Sherman I.S.D. have parents whose children attend the same school in which they teach.  Some students like having their parents at the same school, others do not!  “We like it, said Washington Elementary School second grade twins, Amy and Erin Walston.  If we get sick or forget something, Mom is just down the hall!”

Shown here are Amy and Erin walking into school during their first week of class.

New Bus Entrance at Dillingham

With the concrete poured and drying, Dillingham parents will be happy to know that buses will soon be able to use another entrance and thus alleviate some of the heavy afternoon pick-up traffic and waiting times.  More students riding buses will also help decrease traffic.  At the Dillingham orientation, students and parents were able to check on bus routes and times thanks to transportation personnel attending the meetings.
