This is just one of the photogenic buildings around the Honey Grove square.
Drag out your coon skin cap and make plans to attend Honey Grove’s Davy Crockett Day celebration Saturday, October 5. Legend has it that Honey Grove was named by Davy Crockett and three of his great-great granddaughters will even be in town October 5 to display some of Crockett’s memorabilia. The “sweetest town in Texas” will be buzzing with activities, beginning with a Friday night Spaghetti Supper at the Learning Center. The supper will run from 5:00-8:00 p.m.
The Hall Voyer Learning center will be the location for Friday's Spaghetti Supper.
Saturday morning kicks off with a 7:00-10:00 a.m. Pancake Breakfast at the Honey Grove City Hall, the oldest government building in Fannin County still in use. The limestone for the impressive building was quarried nearby.
City Hall is just north of the square and that is where the Saturday morning Pancake Breakfast will be held.
The historic brick-lined streets around the Honey Grove square will be filled with over 50 arts, crafts, food and fun booths, so be sure and plan for enough time to enjoy the entire celebration. Some of the booths will also be in the Learning Center, and they are scheduled to run from 9:00-5:00.
At 9:00 a.m., the Honey Grove Police Department is sponsoring a Bike Rodeo on the west side of the square. The “42” tournament begins at 11:00 a.m. in the Red Brick Grill, with some great prizes going to the winners. There will be a Children’s Corner in the park on the square.
Honey Grove will have entertainment scheduled for most of Saturday as well. Jack Gillean and Friends get things rolling at 9:00 a.m., followed by the Firehouse Opry from Roxton. At noon, the New Life Gospel Group from Bonham takes the stage, then at 2:00 it will be the County Line Band from Savoy on center stage. Bring a lawn chair and listen to some of the area’s top musicians, and bring a camera to photograph one of most interesting and historic squares in North Texas.
Historic red brick streets run in front of this building.
This is another example of the historic architecture in downtown Honey Grove.
Davy Crockett's great-great granddaughters will have their exhibit in the two-story building in the background, the Hall Voyer Exhibit Hall.
