May 8, 2005

(AUSTIN) - Since 1984, the U.S. Congress has designated the first week of May as National Correctional Officers Week.  During this weeklong observance, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) recognizes and honors the service of its correctional staff, who serve at 106 facilities statewide.

"Texas Correctional Officers are skilled professionals who help the agency fulfill its mission of public safety and it is at this time that we recognize and applaud their service,"  said TDCJ Interim Executive Director Brad Livingston.  "These men and women serve with distinction in one of the most demanding and challenging professioins in all of public service."

"If one of your neighbors wears the gray uniform of a correctional officer, I encourage you to take a brief moment and give him, or her, a word of appreciation," Livingston added.

The appreciation activities will conclude on May 25th with formal ceremonies that pay tribute to correctional employees who have fallen in the line of duty.  This year, the Fallen Officer Memorial Services will be held at TDCJ correctional facilities statewide.

There are currently approximately 24,000 TDCJ correctional officers.
