Is there a final product?  There will be a concert/presentation/show on Thursday evening, June 29.

Who decided to offer this?  It was the brainchild of Suellen Davis, the new orchestra teacher for SISD.  She has taught similar classes in College Station ISD for many years.

How do I get more information?  A brochure is being printed now and will be sent home with students. For more information, contact Melba Avila, who will be serving as principal for the classes.  Contact her at mavila@shermanisd.net.

Got Lemons?  Make Lemonade!
Under the direction of music teacher, Kim Brown, Fairview first graders performed, "Lemonade - When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade".   Using the example of Mother Goose characters and how they tried to see the silver lining in the midst of their troubles, students delighted family and friends with their costumes and acting debuts!  Shown here are several characters, Pam Weathers (The Cow That Jumped Over The Moon), Beth Anne Parker (The Cat With The Fiddle), and Kadee Miller (Mother Goose).

STROLLING THROUGH THE DECADES
Have you ever wondered when Betty Crocker came on the scene? What about the Jolly Green Giant and pineapple upside down cake? Don't lie awake trying to figure out the answers! Just ask Sherman High School's freshmen GT English students. They recently completed an intense study of various decades in the 20th Century and can fill you with all the information you could possibly ever want to know about the FOOD (soup lines to pop tarts), FASHION (flappers, leisure suits and elevator shoes), LITERATURE (The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald to Congo by Michael Crichton), MUSIC (Louis Armstrong to Led Zepplin), ENTERTAINMENT (the game of marbles to Care Bears), ART (Georgia O'Keefe to Andy Warhol), SPORTS (Babe Ruth to Mohammed Ali), and PERSONALITIES (Hitler to Reagan).  GT English teacher, Jan Wilson, explains, "This is one of the most signifcant projects we do each year in the 9th grade GT English classes. Students put a tremendous amount of time and effort into this project, and they have a lot of fun not only doing the research but presenting it." Students form groups and select a particular decade they would like to research. Each group is given 30 minutes to present their findings to their peers and family. This is a very technology driven presentation and is given in the SHS Little Theater. Mrs.Wilson stated, "This is one example of the types of projects we have in the Gifted and Talented Program at SHS. It is a very integrated project which covers many different subject areas and helps prepare the students for future AP exams. Strolling through the Decades was a great success this year, and we are so proud of all the students who participated."

Let's Dance the Rompe
For Cinco de Mayo, Piner decided to have a Latino Achievers Celebration or LAC for their program theme. The sponsor was Piner Spanish teacher, Mrs. Avila, assisted by her daughter, Mrs. Rhonda Marroqumn and Mrs. Vivian Ford, Piner reading teacher.  The awards program featured Latino achievers such as Jaime Escalante, famous math teacher, Cristina, the Oprah Winfrey for Latinos, and Shakira. The program included entertainment by a local dance group, Fiesta Folklorica, under the direction of Mrs. Marroqumn. They performed La Negra, Los Machetes and Paletero Man.  Fifty Piner students participated in the program.  They practiced hard for 20 hours over a 4-week period. Shown here are students performing a very popular dance called Bachata. The whole cast gave a magnificent performance for the grand finale to a famous number titled ROMPE.
