Bean Fest and Great Arkansas Outhouse Races draw crowds to Mountain View, Arkansas

Every October the annual Bean Fest and Great Arkansas Outhouse Races occur in Mountain View, Arkansas, right in the heart of the Ozarks.

This year 35 groups entered the bean and cornbread cook-off and the aroma of fresh cornbread and beans surrounded the courthouse in Mountain View.   Several out of state groups entered the cook-off and won!

First place winner of $150 and a trophy in the bean cook-off was Lanette Beard, second place winner of $100.00 and trophy was Ozark R.V., while the third place trophy and $75.00 went to Bailey and Mosley.

In the cornbread category first place went to Laverne Andrews of Scott, Arkansas.  Second place was awarded to Shelia Albright from Michigan and Sue Norman of Arkansas won third place.

As usual, there were plenty of pickers and grinners around.  In fact, groups of four or five could be seen springing up like blades of grass on every bare corner just far enough apart to keep the tune.  Thousands stand around listening to the music while they wait for the bell to ring at noon to start serving beans and cornbread which takes place right after the judging.  You can always tell when everyone has had their fill of beans by the way they grab a chair, find a shade and listen to more good bluegrass music.

For a small town, Mountain View, Arkansas has the prettiest scenic views, the most talented musicians and people with the biggest hearts and warmest smiles that you will find anywhere.

Just keep in mind that next spring the festivals start over again and will be as much fun as they were this year. On March 6, 7, and 8 of 2008 the Bluegrass Festival will be buzzing. April the 18, 19 and 20 of 2008 some of the best folk music in the world will be gearing up in Mountain View.  Then don't forget the Bean Fest October 23-25 of 2008. You won't regret the trip.
