Laura Moore Fine Art Studios in historic downtown McKinney, Texas, is pleased to celebrate Black History Month with a presentation of internationally acclaimed artist Annie Lee’s exhibition, "Annie Lee: New Originals."  The exhibition will open with an artist’s reception from 7 pm – 10 pm on the evening of February 14 and continue through March 11, 2009.

When people talk about African American art, they will usually mention Annie Lee. She is well known for her realistic and humorous portrayals of contemporary and historical African American family life.

"My paintings are of everyday life. I try to paint things that people can identify with," said Lee.

Since her first gallery show in 1985, during which her paintings sold out in the first four hours of the show, Lee has enjoyed resounding success. Her work has appeared in the sets of popular television shows such as Bill Cosby’s A Different World, ER, and a couple Eddie Murphy movies.

For her use of two-dimensional figures that are set in scenes of everyday life, art commentators dubbed Lee's style "Black Americana." A hallmark of Lee's work is that the figures she paints are faceless.

"You don't need to see a face to understand emotion," she remarks.  "I try to make the movement of the body express the emotion. And people can use their imaginations."

Using her unique designs, Lee also developed figurines, high fashion dolls, decorative housewares, and kitchen canisters.  She has recently completed several new pieces focused on the historic election of President Barack Obama.

Lee earned her Masters in Art Education from Loyola University while working full-time.  She works extensively in acrylics and owns galleries in Chicago and Las Vegas.  Her work has appeared in many major galleries, museums and notable private collections, such as those of Will Smith, the late Arthur Ashe, and D.L. Hughley to name but a few.  She moved to Allen, Texas, from Las Vegas during the last two years.

This will be the first gallery exhibition in the Metroplex for this internationally acclaimed artist.  Don’t miss this chance to meet the important artist.
