DENTON (UNT), Texas ¾  Explore evening gowns inspired by the garments of ancient Egypt in a new exhibition from the Texas Fashion Collection, part of the University of North Texas College of Visual Arts and Design.

Egyptian Elegance, a free exhibition, will be on display Feb. 5 (Thursday) – May 15 (Friday) at Fashion on Main inside Universities Center at Dallas, 1901 Main St. in downtown Dallas. Fashion on Main is open from noon to 5 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays. The exhibition coincides with the Dallas Museum of Art’s ongoing Tutankhamun and the Golden Age of the Pharaohs exhibition.

“Much of the evening wear that you see at the Oscars or Golden Globes has been inspired by ancient Egyptian dress. When you see Jennifer Lopez appear on the red carpet, she often wears a stunning evening gown by Marchesa. The one-shouldered ‘goddess gown’ was worn in many variations by Lopez and also by our new first lady, Michelle Obama, during the inauguration festivities. This exhibition will bring focus on the glamorous aspects of Egyptian fashion. They always dressed liked stars!”

The exhibition — drawing from the 20th-century holdings of the Texas Fashion Collection — features 18 to 20 dramatic evening gowns inspired by such ancient Egyptian garments as the kalasiris (a sheath dress), tunic or caftan. The featured fashions include those by designers Oscar de la Renta, Giorgio di ‘Sant Angelo, Ralph Rucci and Germain Monteil.
