"Smiles for Habitat” Sunday, May 24, 5-10 p.m. benefiting Habitat for Humanity

A FREE family concert will be held in McKinney’s Adriatica featuring the Maylee Thomas Band, Lone Star Attitude and headliner, country sensation Little Big Town and will conclude with a brilliant fireworks display.  Festival activities located near the concert will include rock climbing, bounce houses, face painting, obstacle course and Games2U.

Miss Texas 2006 Shilah Phillips will kick off the festivities with a powerful rendition of the National Anthem.  The Smiles for Habitat concert and festival will celebrate months of hard work by hundreds of volunteers to make the dream of home ownership a reality for one McKinney family.

The Smiles for Habitat concert and festival is made possible by generous donations to the North Collin County Habitat for Humanity.  Funds raised by the 2009 Smiles for Habitat concert and festival will directly benefit the Osornia family of McKinney and the Smiles for Habitat planning committee could not be more excited.

Smiles for Habitat planning committee member Wendy Shelley attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the Osornia’s home in January and said, “Its an honor to be involved with this project.  The Osornia family is so deserving of this home.  It was neat to experience the groundbreaking with them and see the joy in their faces.”

Roberto Osornia  and his wife, Carolina, have already earned more than their required 500 hours of sweat equity to qualify for their home.  Roberto is employed by Aramark and works  as a custodian for the McKinney Independent School District and Carolina cleans homes.  Eager to move into their new home, the Osornias are very grateful for the opportunity provided by Habitat for Humanity to become homeowners.  Their children, 5 year-old Jesse and 4 year-old Miriam, also cannot wait to move into their new home. Miriam is already asking to get a dog to go with their new backyard.

In 2008, the Smiles for Habitat project raised $30,000 to benefit the Habitat for Humanity home of Glenda Alons and her three children.  Also held over Memorial Day weekend in 2008, the concert entertained 6,000 people and featured Maylee Thomas and country and western singer Chris Cagle.

Local orthodontist and McKinney Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year 2009 Dr. Jennifer Buchanan hopes to raise the bar and raise even more this year.

Dr. Buchanan founded Smiles for Habitat in McKinney with the dream of providing local support to McKinney residents who qualify for a Habitat for Humanity home.  Dr. Buchanan hopes to be able to raise enough through the Smiles for Habitat project in the future to build several homes a year.

"We are so excited to be partnering with Habitat to build a home for the Osornia family.  Smiles for Humanity will be a great family event with the festival, live outdoor concert, and fireworks!  Combining fun and charity is another way McKinney is 'Unique by Nature'," comments Dr. Buchanan.
