Leonard -- The parking lot at the Leonard High School baseball field was filled with buses all weekend as area teams competed to see who would leave town with the big trophy.
But Saturday evening when the finals got underway, the only two buses that still had a shot at hauling the best hardware home were from Wolfe City and Trenton.
The Wolfe City Wolves and the Trenton Tigers worked their way through the winners bracket and then finished the tournament in style by giving fans an exciting seven-inning nail-biter.
Wolfe City senior Kory Wilkinson and Trenton senior Justin Hinton faced off in a pitcher's duel that went scoreless for four innings.
Trenton got on the board in the top of the fifth when the Tigers loaded the bases and Dylan Blalock took one for the team to walk in Kevin Long.
Wolfe City got things started in the bottom of the fifth when a third-strike curve went into the dirt and got past the catcher to allow the leadoff runner to reach safely. Wolfe City managed to get runners on second and third. Trenton had two outs and intentionally walked the next batter to load the bases. A pop fly got away from a Trenton outfielder, allowing two runs to score.
That turned out to be all Wilkinson needed.
The big right-hander held Trenton scoreless for the final two innings to pick up a 2-1 win in the championship game and earn the tournament MVP trophy in the process.
It was also an outstanding performance by Hinton to last seven innings without giving up an earned run.
Wolfe City's D.D. Wright was named the best outfielder at the tournament, while teammates Colt Herron and Tyler Deary were named the top catcher and top hitter, respectively.
Trenton's Justin Hinton was selected as the best pitcher and teammate Dylan Blalock was named the best infielder.
