Just south of the Red River is a little settlement by the name of Bug Tussle.  It’s in Fannin County at the junction of FM 1550 and State Highway 34.  Just 10 miles south of Honey Grove and five miles north of Ladonia, this community was originally named Truss, after one of it’s first settlers, John Truss, back in the 1890s. For a whole year (1893-94) this speck on the Texas map even had a post office!

Though there are many tall tales about just how this tiny town got its “new” name of Bug Tussle, the most popular of the legends has two old-timers arguing about a new name.  As the discussion ensued, they were distracted by two busy tumblebugs fighting in the corner.  "Look at those bugs tussle," one reportedly remarked, thereby ending the debate with a newly agreed-upon name.  Other stories also include tussling bugs, and any way you tell it, it’s Bug Tussle, Texas!

Other fame claims, aside from popular tall tales?  Sure!  Here you go:

The name has continued to draw people in, with its oft-photographed country store, and now, a brand new business is born!  Bugtussle Burn Texas Salsa is here!

Jan Allen, creator of Bugtussle Burn Texas Salsa would love to say she’s a great chef, cooking for family and friends over the years; but the truth is, says Jan, “I can bake a little.  The only thing I make that everyone seems to really love is my Texas Salsa!”

And that’s no tall tale!  Just ask anyone who’s tried a batch.  After working on her Salsa for 30 some odd years, Jan decided it was finally ready to offer to the public for their enjoyment.  First shipments are out and on area shelves and it’s a hit!  A little sweet and a little spicy, Bugtussle Burn's secret to success may be that subtle, rich sweetness followed quickly by just the right amount of burn!

Jan had always dreamed of living in the country, so a few years ago when her “deep East” Texas husband, Lee suggested they go for it, it was off to Bug Tussle Texas!  There, the couple has built their home (often dubbed “A little bit of heaven” by lucky guests), and it is TRULY “living in the country! Bug Tussle’s claim to a population of 15 could be a whopping 22 if only “critters” counted…Jan & Lee have a horse named Jake, two cats, Rocky & Stormy, 3 Guinea hens and a donkey named Smiley Burnett!  You can spot all the critters AND friends on Facebook (Become a Fan…just search Bugtussle Burn) and on her website (www.bugtussleburn.com).

In these times, it is so uplifting to hear a story about a new business in our area, and Jan Allen hopes to have a chance to meet as many of Bugtussle Burn's fans as she can.  She encourages messages, suggestions, and even your recipes using her Texas Salsa.  Most of all, she, like all our local business owners, appreciates your support.

“I value all input and have plans to continue to create the tastiest lil’ line of goodies this side of the Red River!” said Jan.
