Denison -- Galleries throughout downtown Denison hosted artists for exhibits and demonstrations during the Fall Fine Art Tour held Saturday and Sunday, November 5-6.
For the fifth year, the Raku Rumble in Heritage Park was one of the highlights of the Fall Fine Art Tour. A specific type of pottery that originated in 16th century Japan, the process involves firing Raku pottery and then allowing the super-heated piece to quickly cool.
For avant-garde art fanciers, the Peanut Gallery, located at 114 N. Houston in Denison offers a distinctively different view from the edge. Art students from Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Austin College and Grayson County College, as well as artists from throughout the region, contributed 80 pieces of work inspired by the Brothers Quay short film, "Street of Crocodiles."
Sponsored by the Sunday Morning Art and Coffee Club (SMAACC), much of the work in this exhibition could be called disturbing, dark and desolate, or, as one patron described it, "another 10 years of therapy."
Steve Black, art professor at Grayson County College, said the recent observance of Halloween combined with the eerie theme of the show "struck a chord within in the art community."
If you missed "Street of Crocodiles," the Peanut Gallery will be open Saturday, November 12, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. For additional information on the “Street of Crocodile” Show or SMAAC contact Steve O. Black at (903) 463-8662 or e-mail to blackst@grayson.edu.
