Powerful modified garden tractors will be competing Saturday as part of the festivities planned for the 6th Annual Heritage Day Celebration in historic downtown Bonham.
The Lone Star Garden Tractor Pullers Association is sanctioning the garden tractor pull slated for 3:00 p.m. May 5 on Old Ector Road in Bonham and approximately 40 competitors will come from across the region.
Bonham businessman Ken Langham will be among the local garden tractor pullers hoping to make sure the championship trophies don't leave town. The Super Stock garden tractor parked outside Langham's automotive repair shop is a good example of the ingenuity of these tractor owners.
What came into the world as an 18-horsepower, twin cylinder 2482 Cub Cadet Lawnmower now sounds like a powerful V-8 engine, and there is a good reason for that -- the engine, clutch and rear end have all been modified to withstand 103 horsepower at 8,000 RPM. In all, Langham will have four entries in the Heritage Day Celebration Garden Tractor Pull.
Another festival favorite is the Civil War re-enactments by Sons of Confederate Veterans. The period dress and gunfights make this popular with children of all ages, as well as photographers.
A full day of activities are planned, including motocross jumps, car & truck show, stories of the Old West, musical entertainers, motorcycle fun run, hot dog eating contest, fireman's rodeo and much more.
