Jonathan Talbott, an entrepreneur in solar technology and GCC alumnus, delivered the commencement address Saturday evening to the 2011-12 graduates of the college. Commencement exercises were held in Cruce Stark Auditorium as the college awarded 995 degrees and certificates.
Students receiving Associate of Applied Science degrees (except Associate Degree Nursing) and Certificates of Completion participated in the 4:00 p.m. ceremony, and students completing the Associate of Science and Associate of Arts Teaching Degrees participated in the 7:00 p.m. ceremony. Receptions followed each ceremony.
Talbott, a GCC student from 1977-79, returned to continue the college’s tradition of having former students speak to the graduating class. Talbott is the former Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, head of the research and development efforts, and co-founder of GT Equipment Technologies, which is now known as GT Solar. GT Solar is the world’s leading supplier of capital equipment to the solar industry.
With another 25 years in the semiconductor and photovoltaics industries, he holds numerous patents in all areas o crystal growth apparatus and processes as well as wafering, slurry systems and thin film deposition. He began his educational path at Grayson College and completed a bachelor’s degree in electronics and automation for controls with a minor in accounting at Texas Tech University.
He and his wife now reside in Pottsboro.
Vice President of Instruction Dr. Jeanie Hardin certified the degrees and certificates before GC President Dr. Alan Scheibmeir and the Board of Trustees conferred the degrees. Invocation was given by Bernie Gallagher, GC Baptist Student Ministry Director, and the benediction by Marc Payne, vice president of student services.
Dr. Scheibmeir recognized the outstanding contributions of retiring faculty. While he didn’t acknowledge it as part of the ceremony, this year’s graduation will be the last for President Scheibmeir. He will be retiring in August after 30 years. He congratulated six employees: Psychology professor Dr. Paul Bowers and Biology professor Jackie Butler are retiring after 31 years each; Science Lab Coordinator Clark Crabtree, 35 years; Biology professor Rodney Nicely, 10 years; and Licensed Vocational Nursing professor Jean Wyrick, 16 years. Counselor and Veteran’s program coordinator Jean Metcalf retired after serving 16 years.
Students earning honors were identified during the presentation of diplomas. GC recognizes students receiving Associate of Applied Science and Associate of Science degrees with a grade point average of 3.70-3.84 as cum laude (C), gpa of 3.85-3.99 as magna cum laude (M) and 4.0 as summa cum laude (S). Students earning certificates of completion with A’s in all certificate classes are listed with “honors:” (H). Students completing the requirements of the Honors College program are designated with (HC).
