Denison -- Sherman and Denison fans filled Munson Stadium on Friday night anticipating something special and that is exactly what they got for the first half.
Sherman scored first when quarterback Dru Smith spotted speedy wide receiver Joseph Harvey running all alone deep behind the Denison secondary. Smith hit Harvey in stride for a 55-yard scoring strike.
A punt by Denison pinned the Bearcats down at their own five-yard line, but Smith looked like he would run for the second score of the evening when he shook off a tackler at his three-yard line and then electrified the visiting crowd by sprinting 97 yards down the Sherman sidelines to pay dirt, only to have the play called back on a penalty.
Instead, it was Smith handing off to Tre Mask, who followed great blocking around the right end to go in standing up from 17 yards out. Sherman was up 14-0 at the first buzzer and the Bearcats seemed ready to put this one away early.
But, just as Sherman controlled the action in the first quarter, Denison dominated all but 25 seconds of the second stanza. The Yellow Jackets stung Sherman for two quick TDs and suddenly the game was all tied up at 14-14.
With time running out in the first half, it appeared the teams would head to their respective locker rooms with the score all knotted up and momentum wearing Yellow and Black, but that all changed when Denison coughed up the ball 25 seconds before intermission.
Mask got the call and another seven points, this time on a screen pass that went for 30 yards. Just that quickly, the high-octane Sherman offense was back in control.
The Bearcats had a 21-14 advantage at the half and Sherman would go on to score four touchdowns in the final two periods to distance Denison, 42-21, in the storied 114th meeting of these two teams.
Sherman moves to 2-0 in District 13-4A as the logjam atop this district continues with Lovejoy, Sherman and Wylie East all undefeated in district play. The top District 13-4A seeds will begin falling in place next week when Wylie East pays a visit to Sherman.
The loss drops Denison to 0-2 and the Yellow Jackets will be looking for their first District 13-4A win of 2012 next Friday at Royse City (1-1).
