McKinney -- Another season of exciting playoff basketball for the Bonham Warriors came to an end Monday night as the Wilmer-Hutchins Eagles picked up a 72-51 bi-district win.
The Eagles scored first, but Bonham took a brief 3-2 lead on a three-point shot by Greg Moses. Wilmer-Hutchins hit a basket, however Bonham pulled even at 4-4 on a free throw by A.J. White.
That turned out to be Bonham's last share of the lead.
Wilmer Hutchins went on an 11-0 run to go up 15-4 before Joseph Gilbert put back an offensive rebound to get Bonham back on track. On the Warriors' next possession, Dra Smith followed his own miss with a lay-up to make the score 15-8 at the end of the first quarter.
A quick Wilmer-Hutchins trapping defense began forcing turnovers that resulted in transition baskets in the next two periods. The Eagles were on top 36-18 at the half and 57-33 going into the fourth quarter.
Bonham battled to the end, though. Moses finished the night with five three-pointers and Jacob Kemp scored the final two baskets of the contest on difficult drives through the lane. But a tall, talented Wilmer-Hutchins team advances to the area round of the playoffs with a 72-51 victory.
Wilmer-Hutchins' 6' 8" senior post Christian McGoggle was the top scorer in the game with 21 points. Teammate Torrey Williams scored 16 and Demarcus Gabriel threw in 13 points.
Bonham junior Greg Moses led the Warriors with 17 points, Dra Smith put in 10 points, Garrett Simpson scored eight, Jacob Kemp had seven points, Joseph Gilbert put up six points and A.J. White contributed three points.
Bonham ends the year with a 13-18 record, while Wilmer-Hutchins moves one step deeper into the playoffs with a 21-11 mark.
