The Bonham Visitors Center was happy to host two groups of young people riding from coast to coast. One group stopped here on Sunday, July 14 and the other group arrived Tuesday, July 16.
Of course you would have to be young (and strong) to even
attempt to ride from Charleston, South Carolina to San Diego, California in July.
That is one long, hot ride! Apogee Adventures guides these groups. They set up the route, make arrangements for rest stops and handle all the details of guiding a group of teenagers on a thirty-five day ride. Some nights they camp out, some nights they stay at churches and some nights they share the hospitality of private homes.
Riders are 15 to 18 years old. Two senior leaders accompany each group of approximately 15 riders. The riders I spoke with seemed very happy with their trip, averaging 80 to 100 miles a day. They got to see lots of small towns and spoke very highly of Bonham, I am pleased to say.
This is billed as Apogee’s most challenging ride and you won’t get any argument from me.
