First movie to be Red Wing

Whitewright, TX -- Whitewright’s Odeum Theater will be reopening on Friday, October 4 after being closed since last December. The previous owner made the decision to shut down in part due to the movie industry’s conversion to all digital movies. The Odeum was still showing movies using 35mm projectors and to convert to a digital projector was going to be costly.

The theater was sold and the new owners went to Whitewright’s Type A board to ask for assistance in obtaining the equipment they needed to open the theater again. The Odeum has always been the anchor for the downtown merchants and so the Type A board was happy to help.

What better way to reopen such an important part of Whitewright than with a major motion picture that was shot in Whitewright last year! Red Wing will be the first movie to play when the theater reopens. The website for Red Wing says it is “a socially thought-provoking and stirring love story based on the French novella, Francois le Champi by George Sand. It is set in a small Texas town in present day. It reminds us of how love can be found in the most unusual places.

Red Wing follows the troubled journey of an orphan boy into manhood. Despite all odds, when confronted with the ill-will of others, he maintains honor and integrity. We learn that if we let it, love takes over and finds its way.

The movie stars Glen Powell, Luke Perry, Bill Paxton, Frances Fisher, Joelle Carter and newcomer Breann Johnson. Part of the movie was also shot in Pottsboro and a few other locations in the Texoma area. Many locals served as extras in the film.

The residents of Whitewright are so excited about the re-opening of the theater and Red Wing that some of them are pitching in to help get the theater cleaned up and spruced up for the big night.
