Tuesday night, the Bonham Warriors varsity baseball team traveled to Melissa to do battle against the Cardinals at their home stadium. The Warriors headed home with the loss 9-4, but played a much closer game than the score will convey.
The Warriors' Kendall Kennedy started on the bump for the away team on this brisk Tuesday evening. Kennedy allowed 7 hits, 3 strikeouts, and 5 walks in his four innings of work, but headed home with the loss to his name. The high intensity game was knotted at zero until the fourth inning when Jordan Quintana took his base on balls with two outs in the top of the inning. With a runner on base, Cole Sparks made the most of the opportunity as he connected with a ball sending it out of the park and giving the Warriors a 2-0 lead. The lead was short lasting, however, as the Cardinals blasted out five runs in the bottom of the inning with the help of a three run bomb courtesy of Melissa's catcher.
The home-run didn't affect the Warriors as Dra Smith started the next inning out with a walk followed by Tristan Hunt's single that moved Smith to second. Both runners advanced a base after a passed ball, and Jared Prock took advantage by crushing a double to the left-center field fence scoring both Smith and Hunt. The game moved into the bottom of the fifth with a score of 5-4.
Melissa managed another run on the board in the inning, and then extended the lead with three more runs thanks to walks and a throwing error by the Warrior defense. The Warriors could not conduct a rally in the last inning and the game ended with a Bonham coming out on the losing end, 9-4.
The Bonham baseball teams will return to action this Friday night, March 28, at home against the Community Braves. The game will be held in Bonham, with JV beginning at 5:00 p.m. and varsity at 7:30 p.m.
