Fannin County Head Start Awareness Month

Bonham --  October is the month Fannin County Head Start and others like it across the country will join together to celebrate and strengthen the nation's awareness of the Head Start Program. Head Start Awareness Month was designed to bring together parents, teachers, students, and other community members. The Fannin County Head Start serves eligible children across Fannin County. The program serves 139 qualifying 3 and 4 year olds in eight classrooms.

Created in 1965, Head Start is the most successful, longest-running, national school readiness program in the United States. During its 46-year existence, millions of children began their formal education in Head Start classrooms across the United States - a success story built on the involvement of parents, volunteers and the community. It provides comprehensive education, health, nutrition and parent involvement services to income-eligible families and their children. In so doing, it has earned recognition and support for its success in early childhood education and development.

The health and nutrition aspects of the program have improved the prevention, detection and treatment of children's medical, dental, and nutritional problems, thereby removing barriers to growth and learning.

Perhaps the most significant factor in the success of Head Start has been the involvement of parents, volunteers and the community. Their commitment and the services provided by dedicated Head Start staff have been instrumental in creating a quality program that truly provides young children with a 'head start' in life.

Various activities planned at Fannin County Head Start this month will include volunteers coming in to read to the children, visits from the Fire Department, and a fire truck. We will also sponsor several parent involvement activities such as Reading under the Stars and Breakfast with Dad.
