Southeastern hosts Piano Festival

DURANT, Okla. - Southeastern Oklahoma State University recently hosted the Southeast Piano Festival.  The National Federation of Music Clubs and Southeastern sponsored the contest,  which drew approximately 75 students.

 

             "The contest is to encourage and promote interest among all levels of ability among students through age 18, with the highest standard of music achievement," said Dr. Mary Ann Craige, music professor at SOSU.

 

                         Winner of the primary keyboard was Rachel Toews, Calera, student of Beverly Coryell. First and second alternates were Canon Spears, Durant, and Colina Hopson, Atoka, students of Robert McFadden and Malinda Durbin.

 

            Elementary Keyboard division winner was Rachel Britton, Durant, student of Beverly Coryell; first alternate was Breck McGough, Durant, and Britney Hill, Atoka, students of McFadden and Durbin.

 

             Junior keyboard division winner was Keeley McGough, student of McFadden; first and second alternates were Andrew Cacho, Durant, and Sally Pickens, Durant.  Both are students of Craige.

 

             Senior keyboard division winner was Alex Heinzmann, Denison.  The musically advanced division winner was Keith Heinzmann, Denison.  Both students were trained under McFadden

 

             The Junior concerto division was won by Amanda Seay, Durant.  She trained under Melina Lucas.

 

            The winners of the junior duet division were Andrew Cobb and Daniel Miles, both from Durant and under the tutelage of Craige. 

 

            Alex and Keith Heinzmann, both from Denison and students of McFadden,  won the senior keyboard division.  Winners of the piano duo division were Jonathan and Robert McFadden of Durant.

 

            The winner of elementary art solo was Laura Nelson, Ardmore, who is a student of Ruth Roberson. 

 

            Primary musical theater winner was Mallory Little.  The first and second alternates were Gabbi Felltman and Makayla Little.  All three are from Kingston and students of Mary Goldsmith. 

 

            The  elementary musical theater winner was Chris Spence, Kingston.  The first and second alternates were Jessica Richardson, Kingston, and Ariana Oliver, Ardmore.  All are students of Goldsmith.

 

            The junior musical theater winner was Lindsey French, Kingston, student of Goldsmith.

            Students winning solo superior ratings for three consecutive years were Colina Hopson, Sally Pickens, and Andrew Ridgway.  Rachel Britton and Blaine Ellett received four-year pins.  Andrew Cacho and Brittany Hill received seven-year pins.

 

            The teachers who participated in the contest were Beverly Coryell, Melinda Lucas, Malinda Durbin, Mary Goldsmith, Ruth Roberson, Mary Ann Craige, and Robert McFadden.

 

  Piano judges for the event were Andrew Dugan from Durant and Carla Fanning from Sherman.  Vocal judge was Betty Wintle from Durant.

 

 The winners competed April 24 at the state convention hosted by Southern Nazarene University in Bethany. Results from that competition were as follows:  Rachel Britton, Honorable Mention in elementary division; Keely McGough, Junior Piano Solo, Honorable Mention; Amanda Seay, Junior Concerto, Honorable Mention; Alex Heinzmann, Senior Piano Piano, Honorable Mention; Keith Heinzmann, Musically Advanced Solo, Honorable Mention; Alex and Keith Heinzmann, Winner, Senior Piano Duet.
