Van Alstyne, Texas -- Services for Carl Vawter, 90, of Van Alstyne will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Scoggins Funeral Home in Van Alstyne with burial to follow in the Van Alstyne Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Carl passed away Thursday in McKinney.

Carl was born January 2, 1925 in Howe, Texas to Claud and Jewel Hall Vawter. Carl graduated from Van Alstyne High School in 1942 and volunteered for the U S Navy at the age of 17. Carl was attached to the Marine Corps and served in the South Pacific. After participating in the invasion of the Palau Islands, he was assigned to the Sixth Marine Division on Guam which was training to invade Japan when World War II ended.

Carl was a member of the First Baptist Church, Van Alstyne and served as Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He was a Mason and a member of the Mantua Lodge. 209. He attened the University of North Texas where he earned degrees in Business Administration and School Administration.

After college he was employed by Gulf Oil Corporation as Budget Analyst in Fort Worth and Houston. In 1963 he was employed by the Van Alstyne School System as Teacher and Principal. After retirement in 1989 he was involved in Real Estate and Building.

Carl was united in marriage to Charlene Richardson in 1949. She predeceased him in 1980. He was later united in marriage to Billie Ruth Gaskill. She predeceased in 2014.

Carl Vawter is survived by his sons, Scott Vawter of Richardson and Kent Vawter and wife Jenna of Valley View. 3 brothers, Guy Vawter and his wife Peggy of Westminster, Colorado, Harold Vawter and wife Paula of Southmayd and Larry Vawter of Whitesboro. 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
