AUSTIN — The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service office of Travis County will conduct a Food Preservation Workshop from 9:30 a.m.-noon March 25 at its offices at 1600-B Smith Road, Austin.
The workshop will include the basics of pressure canning, food safety concerns when canning and the “Ten Commandments” of canning food safely at home, said Sonia Coyle, AgriLife Extension family and consumer sciences agent, Travis County.
Coyle said canning is a science and recipes must be followed exactly to ensure a safe product.
“It is also essential to use recipes based on current research,” she said. “Many recipes found on the internet do not necessarily follow current food preservation standards, so it’s important to be careful as to what recipes and procedures you follow.”
Cost is $35 for early registration on or before March 13 and $40 thereafter.
“The class will be limited to 30 individuals and is open to both adults and youth 8 and older,” Coyle said.
Attendees may register online at https://agriliferegister.tamu.edu/TravisCounty or by phone at 979-845-2604.
