McKINNEY, Texas (March 8, 2017) – McKinney Fire Department (MFD) sent a team of firefighters and volunteers from the McKinney Citizens Fire Alumni Association (CFA) door-to-door in a residential neighborhood that was effected by a fire fatality to educate residents on smoke alarms and ensure existing alarms were working and batteries replaced.

The smoke alarm awareness event was prompted by the fatality fire on Jan. 25, on Norfolk Lane.  The teams were able to make an impact on several families which may save lives. A working smoke alarm is essential.

“Home fires are the greatest disaster threat to American families. Seven people die every day from home fires,” said Fire Marshal Mike Smith. “A fire department responds to a fire every 23 seconds. Annually, home fires cause 3,280 deaths and roughly $14.3 billion in property damage.”
