Odessa, Texas – The Texas A&M University-Commerce softball team recorded its 20th win of the season with a 10-3 win over UT Permian Basin. The win completed the series sweep of the Falcons.
The win brings the Lions to 20-8 and 8-4 in the Lone Star Conference. UTPB falls to 5-23 and 2-10 in conference play.
The Lions return home for a doubleheader on Tuesday against Texas A&M-International. The games start at 11 a.m. at the John Cain Family Softball Complex. The doubleheader is part of Education Day presented by Alliance Bank.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Mariah Jameyson had four hits, including two home runs in the game. She scored three runs and drove in five. Her slugging percentage was 2.500.
- Kinsie Hebler had two hits and two RBIs. She also scored one run.
- Baylea Higgs, Ciera Nunez, December Rivers, Chealsea Slider and Precious Thompson also had two hits.
- Slider and Higgs also had RBIs. Nunez scored two runs, while Tyler Oppenheim and Jordyn Sharp each scored a run.
- Oppenheim had two stolen bases. Higgs and Thompson both had one.
- Selena Rima had the three-inning save. She struck out four batters and didn't give up an earned run. Katie Dean started for the Lions and gave up just one hit in four innings pitched.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lions got on the board quickly in the first. Higgs and Nunez had singles to lead off then Higgs came home on a single from Jameyson. A double play ended the inning with the Lions leading 1-0.
It was a quick three-up three-down inning for Dean in the bottom of the first. The Lions then looked to add to their lead. Slider got a base hit then a double from Thompson. But the Lions could not get the runners around.
In the bottom of the second, UTPB tied up the game. After a leadoff walk, the runner advanced on a groundout and was then driven home on a double off the centerfield fence to score. The game was tied 1-1 after two innings.
The Lions got the lead back in the top of the third. Jameyson reached on a single and then was brought home on a double from Slider. The Lions took the 2-1 lead into the bottom of the third. It was three-up and three-down for the Falcons in the bottom of the third.
The Lions added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning. Oppenheim had a single and then stole second and third base. She was driven in on a single from Higgs. She in turn stole second and reached third on a single from Nunez, who took second base after no one covered the bag. They were both driven home on a single from Hebler. The Lions led 5-1 after four innings.
Thompson had a bunt single in the top of the fifth inning and proceeded to steal second base. She advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt but the next two Lion hitters could not get her home.
The Falcons put together a rally in the bottom of the fifth inning. The two lead off batters reached via walk. An infield hit scored a run and, after another walk, a single scored the second run for the Falcons. The Lions led 5-3 after five innings.
The Lions responded in the top of the sixth. Hebler had a single and then she was driven home by a home run from Jameyson. The Lions led 7-3 after six. Rima had a strikeout in the bottom of the inning and retired the side in order.
The Lions put up three more runs in the top of the seventh. Sharp scored on an error and then Nunez scored on another home run from Jameyson. Bringing the Lion lead to 10-3. Rima got the final three outs to record the save.
