Shorebird Migration at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge
Mid-March - mid-May and mid-August - late October are times to view the Central Flyway shorebird migration at the Refuge. Each spring many thousands of shorebirds pass through, on their way to breeding grounds in the northern US, Canada or the high Arctic. They are back again in the fall, on their way to the tropics or even South America, to spend the winter. The Refuge offers wetlands for resting and re-fueling. Shorebirds can be a challenge to identify; literature and field guides are available at the Visitor Center.
Junior Duck Stamp Art Tour on Display at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center
April 30 – May 7, 2017
The Junior Duck Stamp Art Exhibit is on tour across the country and will be on display at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge from April 30 – May 7, 2017. In conjunction with this national exhibit, art students from local schools will display works that center on the themes of nature and wildlife. The Junior Duck Stamp Program is an offshoot of the Federal Duck Stamp Program.
In 2016, over 25,000 students across the United States submitted entries in the federal Junior Duck Stamp Art Contest. The winning artwork is used as the design for the Junior Duck Stamp. The revenue from the sale of this stamp funds environmental activities for children through a federal curriculum that combines the arts and sciences to teach environmental conservation. The program encourages students of all grades to explore the natural world and express and share what they have learned with others.
Make plans to see the artwork of local students and the national touring exhibit of Junior Duck Stamp winners. Refuge Visitor Center hours are Monday – Friday 7:30 am – 4:00 pm. Saturday 9:00 am – 4:00 pm and Sunday 1:00 pm – 5:00 pm.
Free Tram Tours, Saturdays & Sundays
Take a guided tour of the refuge with an expert birder aboard the open air, all-electric Carlos and Eulalia Cardinal Express! Enjoy a trip along Wildlife Drive and some of the Pad roads at the Refuge, with frequent stops to view and photograph wildlife, especially birds. Learn about the history of the town of Hagerman and the operation of the refuge.
This 60-90 minute guided tour is offered on Saturdays and Sundays at 2 pm, weather permitting. Seating space is limited; please call to reserve your seat: 903-786-2826 between 9am-4 pm Monday thru Saturday or from 1pm to 5 pm on Sundays. Please speak to a volunteer when making or cancelling a reservation as volunteers are unable to access messages on the Refuge phone system. Tours are free of charge; however, donations to the tram maintenance fund are appreciated.
