Parker, Colorado - Riders from over 20 states and Canada converged at the Colorado Horse Park for the 2004 High Prairie Round Up Barrel Race, which offered more than $30,000 in prize money and awards in America West 4-D races as well as Futurity, Derby and Open divisions.

This year's event is larger than ever, said Show Organizer Tim Corfield.  Competitors are concerned about their horses well-being and we ensure the best running conditions around.

Riders seem to really enjoy our event.

In two spectacular runs, Tamara Reinhardt on Vera Hammons Heisaperk and Angelicas Super Jet won the $8,500 Futurity and the $4,000 Derby respectively.

Heisaperk, a bay AQHA gelding, won the futurity with an average of 35.004 seconds.  This is just his third futurity, said Reinhardt.  We are really, really pleased with him.

Hammons gray AQHA Gelding, Angelicas Super Jet, winner of the Futurity two years ago, displayed his talent with this year s Derby win in a two run average time of 34.629.

He was laid off for a year with an injury so to have him come back makes this win special, said Reinhardt.

It s a special week…to have both horses run so well… this doesn't happen very often.

Cody Bauserman and his horse BF Shenanigans was a close second in the Futurity after winning one round, but ended up second with an average time of 35.057 seconds.

Vickie Solmonsen and her horse Dash Chantel finished third with an average time of 35.202 seconds. Second place in the Derby belonged to Barbara Merrill on Hat D Doc with an average run of 34.715 seconds, while third went to Julie Haskins riding Sadies Chick GE in 35.482 seconds.

In a lighter moment, Corfield issued a challenge to combined driving competitors who were also competing at the Colorado Horse Park.

The impromptu Barrel Challenge pitted a team of two barrel horses, a team of driving horses, a golf cart, and a John Deere Tractor against one another around the traditional cloverleaf pattern. An enthusiastic crowd watched the driving team of Mike McLennan and his Friesian Quarter Horse crosses claim victory. Colorado Horse Park Facilities Manager Rob Jansen and his tractor came in 2nd, while Sue Smith in her golf cart was 3rd.

The pair of barrel horses ridden by Jamie Cook of Stoneyford, CA and Peggy Watkins of CO rounded out the Challenge in fourth.
