McKinney honors veterans with two ceremonies on Saturday, Nov. 11

City holds Veterans Day tribute and sundown ceremony

McKINNEY, Texas (Nov. 1, 2017) – The public is invited to join the City of McKinney and McKinney Armed Services Memorial Board in honoring the brave men and women who have served in the U.S. military with two ceremonies at Veterans Memorial Park for Veterans Day this year.

On Saturday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m., officials and dignitaries will gather at Veterans Memorial Park, 6053 Weiskopf Ave., to commemorate our country's veterans during the Veterans Day Tribute.

The ceremony will include guest speaker and retired U.S. Marine Corps Colonel Tony Wood, known for planning and directing the evacuation of U.S. citizens from the Vietnamese capital of Saigon in 1975. The event will also include a missing man formation flyover, patriotic music and parading the colors.

Later in the evening, a sundown ceremony will be held at Veterans Memorial Park at 5:26 p.m. that will include the reading of the names displayed on the Wall of Honor followed by the playing of taps. The ceremony will last approximately 45 minutes.

Veterans Memorial Park in McKinney features a Wall of Honor inscribed with names of Collin County service members who died in the line of duty, and the park honors all veterans. Visit www.McKinneyTexas.org/veteransmemorial for more information on the park or call 972-547-7480.

The Roy and Helen Hall Library, 101 E Hunt St., will also host the Local Heroes Read exhibit for the second year. The display runs during normal operating hours from Nov. 11-18 and will feature pictures of local heroes holding their favorite book. The photos will also include the veterans name, rank, branch of service and awards. Residents can meet the heroes behind the photos at a special reception on Nov. 10 at 3 p.m. at the library.
