We have a new time and place…

Sherman -- The Texoma Genealogy Group will have their second meeting Wednesday, 14 February 2018, from 1:00 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the Sherman Parks & Recreation Center, 1002 N. Music St., in Sherman. Due to the large turnout at our January meeting, we are moving all our future meetings to this location. It also allows us the use of additional equipment and the use of “wifi” for our presentations.

If you weren’t able to attend our January meeting on how to start organizing your family information on forms that will carry you through all your research, we will have a brief review before our 14 February 2018 topic of “U.S. Census Records.” We are always willing to meet “one on one” with anyone who needs help.

“U.S. Census Records” is one of our most popular and well attended classes.  They are one of the most important records available to us and have lots of information you wouldn’t know to look for, but will after this class. We’ll discuss why they were created and the changes in each record as we follow 2 real families from 1940 (last Census available to us) to 1840 (a significant change from what we used to). We take you step by step while following the families and show you what to look for when you search for your own ancestor. You’ll be prepared to search Census Records on your own.

We’re used to reading the texts and print on our phones, but not so much, the cursive of yesteryear.  You may not be able to read a doctor’s script afterward, but you’ll get practice reading legible and illegible cursive. We’ll provide handouts for you to follow along and use as a tool at home.  However, we expect an even larger turnout than in January, so we suggest if you have access to a printer, print out your personal copy (available on our website under 14 February meeting) in case we don’t have enough. Also, a magnifying glass will be of utmost use to you in class (since we will be reading actual U.S. Census Records for practice) and at home for as long as you do research.

See you 14 February, 1-3 at Sherman Parks and Recreation!
