Joan Mathis to speak at Lamar County Genealogical Society meeting Feb. 13

The Lamar County Genealogical Society November meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 13, 2018.  Our speaker will be Mrs. Joan Mathis, a well-known leader in Lamar County.

Mrs. Mathis graduated from North Powderly High School (now North Lamar); and then graduated from Paris Junior College with an Associate of Arts degree. She attended Wiley College in Marshall, Texas obtaining a bachelor's degree in English, and then on to East Texas State University (now Texas A&M Commerce) where she finished with a Master of Science Degree in English. She taught at North Powderly High School four years; Gibbons High School for four years; Paris High School for four years, then began teaching English at Paris Junior College in 1975 until her retirement. She now works part-time at Maxey Funeral Home.

She is a member of St. Paul Baptist Church where she is a member of the Missionary Society, a Youth Sponsor and teacher. She is also a member of the Paris Noon Study Club. She serves on the Paris and Lamar County Habitat for Humanity Board as well as the Paris Education Board.

You do not have to be a member to attend meetings of the Society so please come and bring a friend. The Lamar County  Genealogical Society and Library is located in the south entrance to the historic Santa Fe Depot, 1135 Bonham St., Paris, Texas.

The Lamar County Genealogy Library is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 12:00  to 4:00 p.m., and Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. In addition, the library is open the 2nd and 4th Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. as well as the. 2nd and 4th Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
