Murphy -- The recent heavy and sustained rains have caused serious structural damage to some parts of the nature trail at the Timbers Nature Preserve, causing officials to close it indefinitely.

“There are some parts where the base has been washed away,” said Parks Superintendent Matt Foster.  “The trail and the preserve are generally in a flood plain area, so this is not unexpected, but it is something we pay close attention to.  The safety of our residents and visitors is more than enough reason to close it.”

The closure of the trail will remain in place until a more detailed review and assessment of the situation can be completed, and a remedial plan of action can be developed and implemented.

Significantly, the Timbers Nature Preserve is still open.  However, officials warn residents to closely monitor the weather, and remain vigilant for danger in low lying areas of the park.

Park personnel will continue to monitor conditions at all parks to ensure the highest level of safety and security for park patrons.
