Bonham, Texas -- Funeral services for Murilyn Dendy "Memaw" Hicks, 83, of Bonham, Texas will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 12, 2018 at Ector Baptist Church in Ector, Texas, under the direction of Wise Funeral Home. Officiating will be Max Chandler, Pastor Morris Cook and Bro. Cody Nelson. Interment will follow at Carson Cemetery in Ector, Texas. Murilyn passed away on March 9, 2018 at her home in “Hicksville.” She was born September 20, 1934 in DeKalb, Texas to Burl Dendy and Edith Lambert Dendy.
She married James Ray Hicks on June 28, 1952 at New Zion Baptist Church, north of Ector. He preceded her in death on November 15, 2015. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Burl Dendy & Edith Lambert Dendy; three sisters, Elmeda Dendy, Mildred Winkle, Louise Hughes and daughter-in-law, Susan Elaine Hicks.
She graduated as Valedictorian of Ector High School in 1951 and played basketball under Coach Leonard Gerner. She was a member of Ector Baptist Church, where she served most of her life. She was youth leader, Sunday School teacher, Sunday School clerk, AWANA teacher on Wednesday nights, worked in Vacation Bible School, and delivered tapes of weekly services to shut-ins.
Murilyn grew up on a farm south of Ector picking cotton. After high school, she worked at Woolworth in Bonham. Later she moved to Grand Prairie where she was a secretary/bookkeeper for an insurance company. She moved back to north of Ector in 1960. Afterward, she worked at Bonham Manufacturing for several years. Then she worked with her husband at Hicks-Bilt for remainder of her working life.
Her favorite job was being Memaw to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Memaw’s buffet was always open to her family and no one ever left her home hungry. She always made special dishes for each grandchild.
Surviving are her one daughter, Deborah Green of Bonham; two sons, Gary Ray Hicks and wife Rhonda of Hicksville, TX, Wesley Hicks and wife Lisa of Hicksville, TX; seven grandchildren, Kristina and Cody Nelson, Jared and Anna Hicks, Eric and Heather Hicks, Zachary Green, Ethan Hicks, and Isaac and Rebecca Hicks; seven great-grandchildren, Landon Nelson, Jaden Nelson, Presley, Westin, Hunter, Grady and Gentry Hicks and expecting James Richard Hicks in August; extended family and a host of friends
Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons.
The family will receive friends at 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Sunday on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at Wise Funeral Home chapel.
