Medical City McKinney honors Station 8 crew
McKINNEY, Texas (April 13, 2018) – The McKinney Fire Department (MFD) was honored today for performing an advanced skill that is usually only seen in hospital emergency rooms.
On Feb. 25, MFD received a call about a person choking at a home. The Station 8 crew arrived to find the patient was not breathing and did not have a pulse. They began CPR, but were unable to completely clear the airway. That’s when they performed a successful cricothyrotomy – surgically creating a new airway. The patient began to breathe on his own and was taken to Medical City McKinney (MCM) for further care.
“The MCM attending physicians and nursing staff were very impressed with the McKinney Fire Department’s quick action in providing exceptional care on a critical patient with serious injuries,” said Chris Kellen, EMS Coordinator, Medical Center of McKinney. “Our staff would like to recognize MFD’s exceptional employees for the quality of care they displayed with a very difficult situation.”
