Anna, Texas -- Lynda Jo Alford Culbertson of Anna, Texas went home to be with her Lord and Savior on May 12, 2018 after waging a battle against ovarian cancer.  Family visitation will be Wednesday, May 16, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Scoggins Funeral Home in Van Alstyne, Texas and a memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church Van Alstyne with Pastor Mike Lovely officiating.  Burial will follow in the Alexander Cemetery near Weston, Texas.

She was born July 3, 1947 in Tulia, Texas, to William Tabor Alford and Thelma Jo (Shaw) Alford.  After graduating from Denton High School, she attended the University of North Texas where she earned both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education. She signed her first teaching contract at age 20 with Dallas ISD and taught there for five years.  She moved to Plano where she taught for 8 years followed by 17 years as the Elementary Curriculum Coordinator and later the Art Curriculum Coordinator. 

After retiring from Plano ISD, she taught 6 years as a visiting adjunct professor at the University of North Texas.  In 1999 she founded the Art Barn Studio by converting a horse barn on her property near Anna where she taught summer classes for youth and adults.  She was an artist and created works of art in water color, clay, and cloth.

She is survived by her husband of 24 years, Terrell Culbertson, as well as siblings Karen Reynolds of Addison, Darlene Witten and husband Mike of Denton, and brother: Tom Alford of Denton, four nephews, three nieces, and several great nephews and great nieces. She is also survived by step-daughter Victoria Walden and husband Shawn of Kempner, Texas, and grandsons Dakota Walden and Joey Walden. Other survivors include sister-in-law Sue Castleman and husband Gentry of Duncan, Oklahoma, brother-in-law Charlie Culbertson of Lawton, Oklahoma, and sister-in-law Dianna Simmons and husband Steve of Marlow, Oklahoma.

She is preceded in death by both her parents.

Lynda was a lifelong avid horsewoman.  She combined her love of riding and her natural adventurous spirit and along with her husband Terrell camped and rode trails in national parks and wilderness areas of Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Arkansas, New Mexico, Illinois, and Louisiana.  She was a founding member of the Saddlebags riding group and a charter member of the Texas Equestrian Trail Riders Association (TETRA).  She was a member of the Trinity Trail Preservation Association.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Van Alstyne, Texas.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Van Alstyne Building Fund or the Kids Eat Free summer youth feeding program in Van Alstyne, where she worked tirelessly for the past few years.
