Bonham -- The Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site was one of 22 historic attractions operated by the Texas Historical Commission that hosted Free Sites Day on Sunday, May 6, 2018. The site staff provided free guided tours of the Sam Rayburn House during this annual event.

In recognition of the World War I centennial, guided house tours on May 6 continued with the theme of U.S. involvement in the Great War. Visitors heard stories about Sam Rayburn voting to enter the war on April 6, 1917, his support for the War Risk Insurance Act to provide insurance coverage to soldiers, and his sister Lucinda’s support for the Veteran of Foreign War’s annual poppy sales.

The Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site tells the real story of Sam Rayburn, one of the most powerful and influential politicians of the 20th century, in his authentic 1916 home.
