Bonham, Texas -- On Saturday, February 9 at 2:00 p.m. in the Bailey Inglish Cafeteria, the Black History Committee will present the musical play The Freedom Train.  This play is the story of Harriet Tubman who served as a conductor for the Underground Railroad.  In the years before the Civil War (1861-1865), thousand of slaves escaped from their masters.  Most found freedom in the northern states or Canada.

Many runaway slaves were helped by the Underground Railroad.  It was not a railroad at all, but a secret network of trails and hiding places that led to freedom.  The people who guided slaves to freedom were known as “conductors.”

This play describes the woman who made 19 trips as a conductor for the Underground Railroad in 10 years and rescued more than 300 slaves.  Even though the reward for her capture rose from $10,000 to $40,000, she was never caught and never lost a slave.  Harriet’s code name was “Moses”.

This former slave was also a spy for the Union Army during the Civil War and was the first woman in American History to lead a military expedition.  Amazing feats for a woman who remained illiterate her entire life.  Harriet died in 1913 in Auburn, NY.

This is a program you will not want to miss. The cast consists of residents of Fannin County and the musical voices of the cast will definitely move you. The admission is free and refreshments will be served after the program.  Join us on February 9 at 2:00 p.m. in the Bailey Inglish Cafeteria for The Freedom Train.
