Franzen win highlights final fall rodeo

Alva, Okla. - Southeastern closed out its fall schedule with Gus Franzen picking up the steer wrestling title to highlight the Savage Storm performance at the Northwestern Oklahoma State rodeo in Alva, Okla.

Franzen put together a 4.1 run in the in the long go to split 1st/2nd and was just a bit off that mark in the final with a run of 5.3 which was good for fourth in the round but allowed him to hang on to the top spot in the average.

He was joined in the finals of the steer wrestling by Craig Parks who opened competition with a 5.0 run in the opening round which was good for fourth. He would match his run with another 5.0 in the finals which moved him up to split 2nd/3rd in the average.

Parks is currently the Central Plains Region leader in the steer wrestling while Franzen ranks fifth. Mason Couch checks in eighth and Garrett Elmore ranks 12th.

On the women's side Cara Hilzendeger led a group of five who qualified for the finals in the goat tying, turning in a 6.0 in the first round to finish fourth. She would come back with a 5.7 in the finals to finish second in the round and move up to split 2nd/3rd in the average.

Jaci McLemore was right with her in the average, splitting 2nd/3rd overall, but opened with s seventh place run in the first round before bouncing back in a big way with a 5.5 in the finals to win the round and climb into the tie at second.

Bailey Witt was next in line, turning in a 5.9 in the first round to finish third before following it up with a 6.1 in the finals which ranked fourth in the round and moved her to fifth in the average.

Hannah Giger split 5th/6th in the first round and turned in a seventh-place run of 6.3 in the finals to finish sixth in the average, while Jillian Presley came in eighth in the average after posting runs of 6.3 to split 7th/8th in the long-go and 6.4 to finish eighth in the short-go.

Despite not making the final over thw eeekend, Martie Shockley remains second in the regional rankings in the goat tying, while Hilzendeger, Witt, and McLemore hold the sixth-through-eighth spots. Giger comes out of the weekend ranked 13th.

McKade Wickett picked up a first-round win in the tie down roping with a time of 9.1, but would suffer a no time in the finals, ending the weekend in seventh place in the average.

Wickett continues to lead the region in the event however, while Elmore ranks third and Franzen is in 10th.

In the bareback riding, Tyler Griffin posted a 75 on his first ride which was good for second in the round and followed up with a 69 which ranked fourth in the finals, with his 144 combined score enough to finish second in the average.

Luke Thrash also advanced with a 67 in the first round to finish sxith and followed up with a 71 in the finals, finishing third int hr round and sixth in the average.

Griffin leads the region in the bareback, while Thrash ranks sixth.

Tyler Pruitt led the team in the saddle bronc riding with a 64 on his first ride which split 9th/10th, but a no score on his second ride took him out of the average.

Bryan Moreno is SE's lone ranked saddle bronc rider in 12th regionally.

Back on the women's side, Katelyn Hobbie advanced to the finals in the barrel racing with a 13.05 which ranked fifth in the first round, but a barrel penalty in the finals would take her out of the average.

Mataya Eklund is the team's lone regionally ranked barrel racer in 13th.

A handful of Storm competitors hold regional rankings despite not making a final on the weekend, with Hayden Harris sitting third in the bull riding on the men's side while Eklund and Giger are ranked fourth and ninth, respectively, in the breakaway roping.

Overall the men's team is holding down the top spot in the Central Plains region at the midseason break, whiel the women are ranked second.

Southeastern returns to the arena Feb. 18-20 with a trip to Manhattan, Kan., for the Kansas State Rodeo.
