Leonard, Texas -- Joan Crabb Curry was born September 1, 1925 in the home of her grandparents, Benjamin and Della Ferguson in Leonard, Texas and passed away September 30, 2022 at Sundance Inn and Health in New Braunfels, Texas. She was 97 years old. During her youth, Joan loved attending summer camp with the Camp Fire Girls in Sherman, Texas. She participated for six years, both as a camper and counselor.
Joan graduated from Leonard High School in 1943 and started college that summer at Texas Women’s University in Denton, Texas. After her graduation in 1946, She worked as the Field Director for the Camp Fire Girls in the Sherman/Denison area for three years. She met Albert Eugene Curry on a blind date in 1949 and they married in November of that year. Curry was a Master Sergeant in the United States Air Force. They had two daughters. Catherine, born at Fort Hood, Texas and Victoria, born in Wiltshire, England.
Joan taught school in Austin, Texas from 1956 to 1959, then Denison, Texas from 1959 to 1964. She and her husband then moved back to her hometown of Leonard, Texas where she continued as a teacher and principal until her retirement in 2000. She was a natural teacher who inspired many of her students to enjoy learning and the doors it opens. Joan moved to Blanco, Texas in 2002 to be near her daughters. She had been a resident of Henry House Assisted Living since 2019.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Paul C. Crabb and Nell Jane Ferguson Crabb, her husband, Albert E. Curry, brother, Robert M. Crabb and daughter, Victoria Curry. She is survived by her daughter, Catherine (Greg) Miller, grandchildren, Jody (Jeff) Roberts, Mason (Amanda) Miller and great-grandchildren, Macey, Maria, Miller, Mabry, Davis and Elliott.
Per Joan’s request, there will be no formal burial service. Her cremains will be scattered in places that were special to her. If you wish, memorial gifts may be made to either of the two churches where Joan loved to worship: First United Methodist Church, 206 N.
