Grayson, County, Texas -- Communities throughout the nation will be celebrating the spirit and meaning of the country’s Constitution beginning September 17. On this day in 1787, at Independence Hall in Philadelphia, 39 delegates at the Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution of the United States of America. Nearly 170 years later, in 1955, DAR spearheaded an effort to set aside one week annually when Americans could celebrate this iconic signing. After petitioning Congress to set aside the week of September 17 – 23, on August 2, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed Constitution Week into law.

A local chapter of NSDAR, Preston Trail Chapter, is celebrating with many events to honor this founding document. Members from the chapter have decorated displays in local libraries, Denison Public Library, Sherman Public Library, Pottsboro Public Library and Grayson College Library to promote awareness. A proclamation was signed by Governor Greg Abbott and Denison Mayor Janet Gott will be presenting a proclamation to chapter members on September 18 at the City Council meeting. On Thursday, September 21, several members of the chapter will be dressing in colonial costumes and reading Constitution-themed books at Pottsboro Elementary and the Pottsboro Library.

The Pottsboro Library and Preston Trail Chapter is partnering to provide a Constitution Week Children's Event at the library on September 21, from 5:00-6:00 p.m., where they can participate in a poster contest and learn about the Constitution.

To close out the week, the chapter is hosting a Constitution Week Celebration at Friendship Park in Pottsboro where Pottsboro Mayor Frank Budra will be presenting a proclamation and the chapter will be showcasing Governor Abbott's proclamation.

Everyone is invited to attend these events to commemorate its history, importance, and bring attention to how the Constitution serves us still today.
