Honey Grove, Texas -- Bobby Gene Horton of Roxton, Texas passed from the loving arms of his family and into the arms of His Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 19, 2023, at the age of 83.
Bobby was born January 27, 1940, in High, Texas, just north of Roxton, to Marvin Clarence and Francis Lucille Yates Horton. He attended Roxton public schools and graduated from Roxton High School in 1958. He married his love, Doris Wynell Reece, of Windom, Texas, on September 11, 1959. Their pride, joy and great accomplishment was raising their seven children. They began a tradition of hosting Thursday night dinner each week as an opportunity to bring the family together, a tradition that continues to this day.
Early on, Bobby worked at Derose Industries in Bonham, Texas. He then went to work in construction and worked at Campbell Soup for 6 years. In 1973, he started his own business, Bobby Horton Construction and Cabinet Shop and built many custom homes and cabinets in
Lamar, Delta, and Fannin counties. He loved people and was always active outside his career with hobbies of gardening, hunting, fishing, beekeeping, and dancing. He was a member of the Roxton United Methodist Church, where he was baptized as a young boy and served faithfully in various capacities for many, many years.
His love for his community was evident, as he enjoyed serving as a board member of Roxton ISD, the Roxton Volunteer Fire Dept., Roxton Kiwanis Club, Roxton Ex-Students & Associates, and the Roxton Community Development Center. In May of 2015, he was presented a “Hometown Hero” plaque in honor of his service
and support of the City of Roxton and Roxton ISD.
Bobby was a generous man – always willing to help those in need. He was full of life and enjoyed spending time with friends; but most of all he loved and adored his family. He is survived by his wife, Doris, and seven children; a son Keith Horton and wife Helen of Mullen,
Idaho, a son Ricky Horton and wife Cynthia of Paris, a son Randy Horton and wife Alison of Roxton, a son Barry (Mick) Horton of Roxton, a daughter Darla Taylor and husband Sandy of Soper, Oklahoma and twin daughters Traci Shoemake of Paris and Staci Russell and husband
Robby of Paris, ten grandchildren, and many and counting great grandchildren, numerous in-laws, nephews and nieces of the Horton and Reece families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Marvin Clarence Horton, Jr., father-in-law James Monroe Reece and mother-in-law Lovie Eliza Dawson Reece, a son-in-law Steve Shoemake, and a beloved grandson
Robert Andrew Russell. Bobby was loved by many and will forever be remembered.
