Cosper Texas State Veterans Home from Wednesday, May 1 to Thursday, May 2, 2024.
  • Texas Governor Greg Abbott today issued a disaster declaration for 29 Texas counties impacted by severe storms and flooding that began last week and continues to affect homes, businesses, and the agricultural industry throughout the state. The counties in the Governor’s declaration include: Baylor, Chambers, Dickens, Ellis, Freestone, Galveston, Grimes, Harris, Haskell, Hill, Hood, Hunt, Kaufman, Knox, Leon, Liberty, Limestone, Madison, McLennan, Montgomery, Navarro, Polk, San Jacinto, Somervell, Tarrant, Trinity, Tyler, Walker, and Wichita counties.

  • The purpose of the feasibility study is to analyze potential roadway options to improve FM 455, including improving an existing alignment or developing new alignments. The proposed study could potentially result in projects that require additional right of way and include construction in wetlands and an action in a floodplain. The study area is within the City of Celina and ends just west of the City of Weston.
  • Motorists are advised to remain alert and pay special attention to all signs, barricades and traffic controls, and reduce their speed as they approach and travel through work zones.

  • On April 22, I formally notified the Republican Party and Registrar of Voters for Fannin County that I was withdrawing from the Republican Runoff for Fannin County Precinct 3 Commissioner.
  • A series of cost-cutting measures has reduced the price tag for the justice center project down to a rough estimate of $12.8 million. The county has $12.9 million on hand for this project and Fannin County Judge Newt Cunningham reiterated his commitment to refrain from borrowing any more money for the project. Curtis Nelson, a professional drafter with Eikon Consulting Group, said the county can expect a firm estimate in approximately eight weeks. "This isn't an expenditure; this is an investment," Judge Cunningham stated.

  • The contractor will replace these bridges and their approaches: CR 1202 at Brushy Creek and CR 4020 at
    Caney Creek in Fannin County, and Southmayd Road at Elba Creek in Grayson County. These roadways will be closed while these projects are underway. The target completion date is April 2025.

  • By a 4-1 vote, Fannin County Commissioners Court approved marketing five acres of county-owned property located on FM 897. The county owns five acres near a boat launch on Bois d'Arc Lake that is currently zoned for agriculture and on the tax rolls at more than $400,000. "We probably need to consider re-zoning the lot before marketing it," Judge Cunningham suggested, adding that he believes, once the property is zoned for commercial use, the county can push for a seven-figure deal.

  • Fannin County Judge Newt Cunningham signed a proclamation declaring April to be Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month in Fannin County. This proclamation was signed during Commissioner’s Court on Tuesday, April 2, 2024. The courthouse was full of child abuse professionals, Fannin County Crisis Center staff, CASA volunteers, Fannin County Children’s Center (FCCC) Board Members, elected officials, and FCCC staff.

  • April is an active month for the Fannin County Amateur Radio Club, in many ways. From the net for the eclipse on April 8 to the weather net later that evening, the club operated their radios with updates on the conditions in the area. The weekly net check-ins and net control operations pays off when the conditions warrant.
  • Over the last two months, Texas Mitigation Solutions (TMS) started work restoring a key portion of the North Sulphur River as part of the Lake Ralph Hall project. In the 1920s, the natural path of the North Sulphur River was straightened and channeled to help protect farmland along the river from periodic flooding. The original channel was 16-20 ft. wide and 10 ft. deep. Since that time, massive erosion has expanded it to 350 ft. wide and over 60 ft. deep–nearly ten times its original size. Wetlands, quality habitat and multiple state highway bridges have been destroyed in the process. The mitigation project is returning a section of the river downstream of the dam to its natural, meandering path.
  • The IRS announced today that eligible Texas taxpayers can now use IRS Direct File, a new service that provides taxpayers with the choice to electronically file their federal tax return directly with the IRS for free. Direct File is a mobile-friendly, interview-based service that will work as well on a mobile phone as it does on a laptop, tablet or desktop computer.

  • Teams began setting up grills early Saturday morning for Fannin Agricultural Association's 2nd Annual Steaks on Main Ribeye Cookoff. By noon, all 1,100 tickets had been sold. Even if you weren't fortunate enough to secure tickets for the steak dinner, come enjoy an outdoor concert in one of the oldest towns in Texas, courtesy of Fannin Agricultural Association, Inc. This year's headliner will be Cody Canada and the Departed, with opening acts Waves and Red Stone Revival.
  • McKinney Air Center, the city's fixed-based operator at McKinney National Airport, has been rated among the top 10 percent service providers in the 2024 AIN FBO Survey: The Americas. The survey, released on Friday, evaluated thousands of aircraft handling facilities, with McKinney Air Center standing out as one of the best in the industry.

  • Raynaldo Riviera Ortiz Jr., 60, was charged by criminal complaint in September 2023 and indicted the following month on charges related to tampering with IV bags used at a local surgical center. After eight days of trial and seven hours of deliberation, a jury convicted him of four counts of tampering with consumer products resulting in serious bodily injury, one count of tampering with a consumer product and five counts of intentional adulteration of a drug.
  • Investment Catalysts LLC of Southlake, Texas, acquired 75.9 acres on Farm-to-Market Road 1417 in Grayson County, about 70 miles north of Dallas, with the intent to hold the parcel for investment purposes. "This land acquisition represents perfect timing by the buyer," Younger Partners Executive Managing Director John St. Clair said. "They made this purchase right there in the bullseye, where everyone is looking for this type of land today. The estate has additional tracts nearby that are available and just as desirable."
