This spring, enjoy an exciting array of events at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden that celebrate nature, art, culture, and community. From March through May, guests can enjoy a diverse calendar of exhibits and activities for all ages.

Celebrating Hispanic heritage and tradition, the Dallas Cinco de Mayo Parade – presented by the Oak Cliff Coalition for the Arts (OCCA) – is set for Saturday, May 3, from 8:00 a.m. to noon in Dallas’ Oak Cliff neighborhood. Billed as the biggest and longest-running parade in North Texas, the mile-long procession will take place on historic Jefferson Boulevard, a vibrant hub for Hispanic communities and businesses.

Texas Women's Foundation has announced details of its Leadership Forum & Awards Celebration on May 8, 2025, at the Omni Dallas Hotel (555 S. Lamar St., Dallas, TX 75202).

With the Texas population continuing to grow, more and more projects are popping up to address congestion and improve safety. Crews at these sites just want to get the job done and come home safe to their families. But drivers are actually more often the people getting hurt in work zones. Last year 190 people were killed in work zones, and 77% were drivers or their passengers.

1867 – Alaska is purchased from Russia for $7.2 million, about two cents/acre, by United States Secretary of State William H. Seward. At an original cost of $0.02 per acre ($0.36 per acre in 2023), the United States had grown by 586,412 sq miles. Reactions to the Alaska Purchase among Americans were mostly positive, as many believed that Alaska would serve as a base to expand American trade in Asia. Some opponents labeled the purchase as "Seward's Folly" or "Seward's Icebox" as they contended that the United States had acquired useless land. Nearly all Russian settlers left Alaska in the aftermath of the purchase; Alaska would remain sparsely populated until the Klondike Gold Rush began in 1896. Originally organized as the Department of Alaska, the area was renamed the District of Alaska in 1884 and the Territory of Alaska in 1912, ultimately becoming the modern-day State of Alaska in 1959.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) officials have announced upcoming US 75 northbound and southbound mainlane closures, beginning near FM 691 on the south and Crawford St. on the north. The closure is scheduled from 9:00 p.m. on March 26, until 5:00 a.m. on March 27, to facilitate the placing of the bridge deck.

It is important to note that an indictment is a formal charge and should not be considered as evidence of guilt and that all persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The McKinney Community Development Corporation (MCDC) is pleased to announce that they have awarded project grants to support quality-of-life projects that will benefit the community.

A small group of Old West amateur historians are inviting area residents to join them in a gravesite ceremony in honor of Olive Oatman-Fairchild at 5:30 p.m., Friday, March 21 at West Hill Cemetery, 1304 W. Lamar Street in Sherman, Texas. Mrs. Oatman-Fairchild passed away March 21,1903.

Come on out to the shady, peaceful countryside found at historic Shilo Cemetery. Work to be done includes clearing returning brambles and briars, and removal of fallen branches.

On March 19, 2025, Fannin County First Assistant District Attorney, Nathan Young, secured the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison in the Intoxication Manslaughter case of Kyle Scott Wilson, 38, of Trenton. Wilson also received the maximum sentence of 10 years in prison in two cases of Intoxication Assault with Vehicle.

During a regular meeting of Fannin County Commissioners Court on March 18, 2025, Pct. 3 Commissioner Kurt Fogelberg made a motion to appoint Fannin County Emergency Management Coordinator Troy Hudson to a two-year term as Fannin County Fire Marshal. Pct. 1 Commissioner Troy Waggoner seconded the motion and the motion passed unanimously. Initially, Hudson will enforce the state fire code; he estimated that it will take 30 days to adopt a more stringent county fire code. Established businesses will be compelled to come into compliance.

At a joint meeting, the McKinney Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and the McKinney Community Development Corporation (MCDC) approved the issuance of sales tax revenue bonds to fund the construction of eastside infrastructure at McKinney National Airport.

Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) officials today announced an update to the speed limit on SH 121 in Fannin County between Bonham and Trenton, to 70 mph. The speed limit update will go into effect once the signs are in place on March 20. The limits of change are from the south city limits of Bonham to the north city limits of Trenton.

Mowing is the single most important aspect of cemetery maintenance and also the most expensive. Costs have increased steadily every year. Donations are our biggest source of revenue. Willow Wild has undergone a remarkable transformation since last fall. Fence lines have been cleared, and trees have been trimmed. Dead trees have been removed. The grounds are cleared and cleaned. In a month or so, it will be beautiful. We need your help to keep it looking the way our community deserves.

With no rain in sight and high winds forecast this week, Fannin County Judge Newt Cunningham has issued a Disaster Declaration related to the risk of wildfires. Outdoor burning is prohibited throughout Fannin County until midnight Saturday, March 22, 2025. Any violation of this Disaster Declaration is punishable as a Class C misdemeanor by a fine not to exceed $500.00 or as authorized by Government Code §418.173 and if adopted in the county's emergency plan by a fine not to exceed $1,000.00 or confinement in jail for a term not to exceed 180 days, whichever is greater.

The Craft Road bridge in Grayson County at Craft Road crossing Choctaw Creek Tributary is a Camelback pony metal truss bridge built in 1920. The bridge originally carried a railroad, but it was relocated to its current spot in 1950 and widened. The bridge is significant for its engineering history as a local example of a truss bridge. The bridge is in poor condition but with needed repairs and overall painting, the truss could be repurposed as a pedestrian bridge.

Motorists are advised to remain alert and pay special attention to all signs, barricades and traffic controls, and reduce their speed as they approach and travel through work zones. They should also avoid distractions such as cell phones, eating, drinking, or car audio or navigation systems.

Imagine a simple clay bowl on the table, its surface rough and unpolished. It is empty, its hollow center, a quiet reminder of the pain and silence many carry within. Recognizing the critical role of early detection in breast cancer treatment, the Mark Cuban Heroes Basketball Center is partnering with Parkland Health to host the Mammograms Save Lives event on Saturday, March 22, from 7:00 a.m. to noon. What do you see when you cross the threshold into these businesses? Do you see Bonham's past?

I was curious about the relationship between Harry S Truman and Sam Rayburn because of a piece of corn. Currently at the Sam Rayburn Museum there is corn on the cob encased in resin on display in the "Gifts of a Nation" display case. No one is completely certain why Rayburn had it, but Truman has the same one. This is what led me to look into the friendship between Rayburn and Truman. Bonham resident Kay Sisk has collected postcards of Bonham for many years, finding them at trade shows and estate sales. Some of the postcards were given away free by local businesses, and some were sold. The Fannin County Museum of History asked Kay to display some of her postcards in the display case on the 2nd floor of the courthouse.

"Japanese War Brides: Across a Wide Divide" begins a national tour December 14 at Irving Archives and Museum in Irving, Texas. These young women left their homes to build lives within the complexities of postwar American society. Their experiences reshaped communities by challenging immigration laws and race relations. The arrival of these brides marked the largest women-only immigration event in U.S. history and, by 1960, had increased the population of Asian Americans in the U.S. by 10%.

Historic Fannin County newspapers often featured beautiful front pages for their Christmas editions. An exhibit of these newspapers is now on display on the 2nd Floor of the Fannin County Courthouse. Visit the courthouse during this season to view this display and beautiful decorations.

Upper Trinity's contractors are finishing up construction on five new streams near future Lake Ralph Hall, which will flow into the North Sulphur River. The newly connected tributary streams are naturally beginning to flow with rainwater this fall, bringing life back to areas impacted for decades by severe erosion and loss of habitat. Restoring the tributaries of the river to their natural, curved paths helps mitigate the area's severe erosion and provide previously lost habitat.
