DFW radiates with unity at the 'Sparkle of Joy' Diwali celebration

Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas -- The Dallas-Fort Worth Hindu community lit up the metroplex with the “Sparkle of Joy” Diwali celebration, a vibrant gathering that welcomed over 150 attendees at the elegant home of Pankaj and Mahima Kumar. This festive evening showcased the unity, cultural pride, and contributions of the region’s Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, and Jain communities while honoring Diwali’s universal message of light triumphing over darkness.

A gathering of leaders and dignitaries

The celebration was graced by an impressive array of dignitaries, including county judges, mayors, city officials, and representatives from the Consul General of India in Houston. The event demonstrated the vital role of DFW’s 350,000-strong Hindu community in shaping the region’s cultural and economic identity. Leaders from over 80 temples and organizations stood in solidarity, symbolizing the strength of interfaith and inter-community collaboration.

Celebrating light and unity

The evening began with the auspicious sound of a conch, blown by Hemant Kale of the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS), and the ceremonial lighting of the lamp by Pankaj Kumar and Consul Prashant Sona from the Consulate General of India. Priya Pandit of the Hindu American Foundation emceed the program with grace and warmth.

Consul Sona delivered an inspiring speech on Diwali’s timeless significance, while civic leaders highlighted the Hindu community’s cultural and civic contributions. Coppell Mayor Wes Mays humorously captured the evening’s optimism, saying, “Our future is so bright, we all have to wear shades.” Carrollton Mayor Steve Babick emphasized Diwali’s growing cultural role in DFW, and Addison Mayor Bruce Arfsten commended the community for its influence in business, education, and civic life.

The celebration featured captivating performances, including an elegant Odissi dance by Pushpa Panda and a mesmerizing veena recital by Aarati Prabhala of Sangeet Bharati. Guests were treated to a delicious Indian feast and uplifting music, creating a lively and festive atmosphere.

Service and solidarity

Diwali’s increasing recognition across DFW was underscored by proclamations from over ten cities, including Frisco, Plano, and Flower Mound. Mayor Babick remarked that Diwali has become “an increasingly integral part of our culture,” highlighting its role in fostering community unity and shared values.

The evening also shone a light on the community’s philanthropic efforts, particularly through initiatives like Sewa Diwali, a nationwide food drive. These efforts underscore the Hindu community’s commitment to giving back and fostering unity. Reflecting on the event, Mahesh Chamaria of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS)  stated, “This gathering demonstrates the power of togetherness in fostering harmony and understanding in DFW’s diverse metroplex.”

As the celebration concluded, Gitesh Desai of Sewa International expressed heartfelt gratitude to attendees, leaving them inspired with a renewed sense of community and purpose. The “Sparkle of Joy” was not just a Diwali celebration—it was a beacon of hope, unity, and optimism for all.
