Maxey House to hold Easter event

Paris, Texas -- The Sam Bell Maxey House State Historic Site is inviting the public to come and enjoy various Easter activities at the site during the “Easter Egg Scramble at the Maxey House” on Saturday, April 19.

There will be two separate sessions to choose from: the first at 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. and the second at 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in an egg hunt, or “scramble”, on the grounds followed by Easter-themed crafts, and the classic Victorian optical illusion toy, thaumatropes. Yard games will also be available for play throughout the event.

Site staff advise that visitors arrive early for the egg hunt.

“This Easter event is one we look forward to every year at the Maxey House. Not only is it exciting to see the children dash to get as many eggs as possible, but this event also has historical significance,” said Elana Barton, site educator. “Lala Long used to have Easter activities for neighborhood children on the grounds. In our collection, we have a picture of the neighborhood children in their Easter best with their baskets after one of Lala's Easter egg hunts. ‘Easter Egg Scramble at the Maxey House’ is a fun way to continue one of Lala’s traditions while inviting the community out to have fun on the grounds.”

This free event is open to children of all ages. Tours of the house will be available during the event at the regular admission price of $5.00 for adults; $3.00 for seniors, veterans, and college students; $2.00 for children 6 to 18 years old; and free for children 5 and under.

Sam Bell Maxey House State Historic Site, a Texas Historical Commission property, was built in 1868 in the High Victorian Italianate-style as the home of Samuel Bell Maxey and his wife Marilda. Maxey served in the U.S.-Mexico War, was a Confederate general and two-term U.S. Senator.   • On this day -- April 10
    1979 – Red River Valley tornado outbreak: A tornado lands in Wichita Falls, Texas killing 42 people. On Tuesday, April 10, 1979, a widespread and destructive outbreak of severe weather impacted areas near the Red River between Oklahoma and Texas. Thunderstorms developed over West and North Central Texas during the day within highly unstable atmospheric conditions following the northward surge of warm and moist air into the region, producing large hail, strong winds, and multiple tornadoes. At least 22 tornadoes were documented on April 10, of which two were assigned an F4 rating on the Fujita scale; four of the tornadoes caused fatalities. Hardest hit were the communities of Vernon, Texas; Lawton, Oklahoma; and Wichita Falls, Texas, which were all impacted by strong tornadoes. The F4 Vernon tornado struck southern and eastern parts of the city at approximately 4:45 p.m. CST, destroying several residential blocks and killing 11 people. An F3 tornado spun up in Lawton at 5:05 p.m. CST, destroying 167 buildings and killing 3 people. The most significant tornado of the day was an F4 tornado that began east-northeast of Holliday, Texas, at around 5:50 p.m. CST and moved east-northeast into Wichita Falls, taking an 8-mile course through densely-populated areas of the city and destroying over two thousand homes across several neighborhoods. The tornado spanned as wide as 1.5 miles across during its passage through the city, with the most severe damage occurring within a 0.5 mile-wide swath. At least 45 people were killed within the city and nearly 1,800 people were injured, ranking the tornado among the deadliest in Texas history. A majority of the fatalities occurred as the tornado mangled and tossed vehicles.

  • The friendship of Sam Rayburn and Harry S Truman
    I was curious about the relationship between Harry S Truman and Sam Rayburn because of a piece of corn. Currently at the Sam Rayburn Museum there is corn on the cob encased in resin on display in the "Gifts of a Nation" display case. No one is completely certain why Rayburn had it, but Truman has the same one. This is what led me to look into the friendship between Rayburn and Truman.     Bonham resident Kay Sisk has collected postcards of Bonham for many years, finding them at trade shows and estate sales. Some of the postcards were given away free by local businesses, and some were sold. The Fannin County Museum of History asked Kay to display some of her postcards in the display case on the 2nd floor of the courthouse.

Some of my favorite projects included teddy bear-themed designs for my oldest daughter and several train-inspired pieces for my dad, who had a deep love for locomotives.
