Durant, Okla. – The Southeastern Oklahoma State University Department of Performing Arts will present the Southeastern Percussion Ensemble on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Building Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public.
The percussion ensemble consists of both music majors and non-music majors from throughout Texas and Oklahoma. It is open to all students with director’s permission. The ensemble is under the direction of Dr. Jamie Vilseck.
The program features eight works by some of the most prominent and important composers in the percussion field including John Cage, Chad Floyd, Mark Ford, David Gillingham, Lou Harrison, Francisco Perez, Wes Stephens, Ivan Trevino, and Andrea Venet.
“Double Music” is a piece of historical significance, composed by Cage and Harrison. The composers agreed on a set length and meter for the piece and then composed two parts each completely separately from the other, creating a cacophonous dance through instruments selected by the students. Trevino’s “Watercolor Sun” puts all players upon a single instrument, navigating not only their music, but also each other as they perform. Through groove and joyous harmony, Trevino’s work aims to capture the indescribable feeling of warmth, friendship, or peace one feels when around those they care about. Concluding the concert is the featured piece “Angels of the Apocalypse” by Gillingham. The work is inspired by events in the Book of Revelation, representing the events and havoc caused from the seven angels blowing on their trumpets. After much chaos, the work ends with a majestic hymn.
Additionally, there will be pre-concert music written by Dr. Jamie Vilseck. This music uses pitched wine glasses and bowls along with a playback track to create a meditation-like soundscape, guiding the audience into the concert. Audience members should feel no pressure to either contemplate the music being played or converse with their neighbors during this pre-concert music.
