History of the Grandma Stand

The Grandma Stand began in 2012 when creator Mike Matthews set up a small street-corner booth in New York City to connect his 95-year-old grandmother, Eileen Matthews, with passersby through friendly, face-to-face video chats. After Eileen passed away in 2018 at age 102, Matthews revived the idea with a bright purple pop-up stand, Eileen’s favorite color, now hosted by a rotating group of “grandmas” from around the country. Each Grandma Stand pop-up offers free wisdom and empathy to anyone who stops to chat, reminding people that a simple conversation can brighten a day.
